Putin may be a psychopath, but the Russians aren't the cartoon demons that the west used to portray them as during the cold war.

Chernobyl was identified as a key asset because it's "in the way". It's near one of the key routes from Belarus to Kyiv, and the Russians will want to avoid any serious fighting from taking place near it in case the power plant is struck. So secure it, and move past it as soon as possible to keep any fighting away from it.

Nobody is stupid enough to fvck around with it.

The reference by Black Noel was to NATO's alleged actions. Are you saying that Poland, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania were bribed into joining NATO? Total rubbish.

Raul Duke III: are you implying that NATO or somw other Western governments have supported the rise of Trumpism in the US? This must win some sort of Nobel prize for fiction.

Imagine a few years ago having so much pro Russian support being voiced by American politicians and media commentators. Well done agent Trump, he couldn't have done a better job for Putin. Managed to undermine their democratic system by claiming elections are rigged and cosying up to dictators like Putin and Kim while undermining NATO and falling out with western leaders.

"But no one has done more to hype Russia—and, by extension, been more indifferent to the people of Ukraine—than Fox News’s biggest star, Tucker Carlson. He has suggested that the invasion was the result of a mere “border dispute.” He has repeatedly echoed the Kremlin’s own talking points on the war, suggesting that the real issue was that Democrats don’t want Russia to succeed. “Their one and only goal is to hold back the development of Russia,” Carlson said on Monday, while also suggesting that Ukraine was effectively a client state: “a colony with a puppet regime.”

Carlson further characterized Ukrainians as warmongers, desperate to fulfill a blood feud with Putin that will jeopardize American lives—a particularly spurious claim given that Russia has unambiguously been the aggressor and is currently bombing sites all over the country. All of these, as Insider pointed out earlier this week, are the exact same points Moscow is using to sell the invasion as a necessity—indeed, Carlson’s segments have already shown up in Russian propaganda.

Carlson really hit his stride on Tuesday, during one of his a typically stern-faced monologues. “It may be worth asking yourself, since it is getting pretty serious, what is this really about?” he asked, rhetorically. “Why do I hate Putin so much?” he continued. “Has Putin ever called me a racist? Has he threatened to get me fired for disagreeing with him?” To Carlson’s thinking, Putin’s cruelties can be dismissed as other people’s problems—or even assets: If Putin is against civil rights, social justice, and democracy, that makes him, broadly speaking, an ally."

This is the problem with western thinking in the face of Putins aggression. "War crimes" as we call them in the west, is just war to the Russians. Russian logic is - "will it help us win? Then we'll do it."

Edit - I am not advocating war crimes, just showing the difference in west vs Russian thinking

Yeah, any posts suggesting 'NATO should shoot down their planes', 'put boots on the ground' or 'take out Putin' are completely divorced from this fundamental reality; there will not be NATO troops directly facing off against Russian troops in Ukraine.

That is the unfortunate reality. The Ukrainians know this as much as the Russians do. All the West can do is embargo Russia back to the economic stone age, provide as much aid (military and non-military) to Ukraine as possible and work to strengthen the coalition of decent nations against this evil.

Ukraine government asking citizens to prepare petrol bombs to fight the Russians…. Puts things in perspective that people were freaking out here over mask wearing/ limits of people at a table in the pub.

Why would a country with 6,000 nuclear warheads and modern delivery systems require a big dirty bomb?

Chernobyl is on the shortest route from Belarus to Kiev.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,611 ✭✭✭timmyntc

But sure I thought Trump was a Russian agent looking to destabilise NATO?

Puts things into perspective as to how the war effort is going, not great unfortunately if theyre relying on civilians to fight for them. Same goes for the announcement that males 18-60 are banned from leaving the country - drastic move that shows Ukrainian defence is not doing so well.

Maybe a stupid idea, but why can't "allies" just send in a bunch of painted unmarked bombers and bomb the **** out of those tank columns?

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

Did they not used to have nuclear weapons? Sort of failed themselves, they old adage "it is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war" is apt.

First they came for the socialists...

    That's where the victory lies.

Iraq was beaten in days, but when Sadr was arrested, a militia of Shia civilians started escalating attacks on American forces and started blooding them and said it was only starting, he was released.

Pretty sure it was when he floated the idea that the US would not defend its NATO allies (including the baltics which are outside of that German request).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,431 ✭✭✭combat14

it can still happen in baltic .. massive numbers of russians there .. only need to hand out russian passports & guns and do nothing else. ....

They gave them up in exchange for guarantees from the US on their safety

I think it might not be a bad thing if the American shock jocks out themselves for what they are. They're very much in Lord Haw-Haw territory and I don’t think they’ll be forgotten for it.

They’ve an incredibly broken political discourse. I don’t think it’s ever been this bad. They seem to be both so gullible (or at least their audiences are) and so conspiracy theory oriented that they will fall for petty much any propaganda and are extremely easily manipulated and they seem obsessed with strongman authoritarianism.

These characters an utter disgrace. It’s shocking how far it’s gone.

I honestly think the US could prove to be totally useless in this if things go into partisan political crazy and you can be 100% sure Putin is counting on that and will be running propaganda and psychological operations to ensure that it tips that way. You can already see it sloshing around on social media platforms.

Meanwhile in Europe, Germany, Italy and Hungary seem to be standing in the way of serious sanctions, with italy looking to “carve out” luxury goods. So much for EU solidarity!

Well done lads, let someone else take it for the team, right? It’s pretty embarrassing when Ukraine is getting more solidarity from Canada and Japan than some of the EU countries.

It was not just the US, but from the rest of the Nato countries and Russia. There were given a gairantees that if attacked by either side the other side would come to there aid

    Slava Ukrainii

    Scary isn't it.

Although they say nuclear weapons are meant to be a deterrent. You nuke me and I'll nuke you. Problem with that is its just a belief. Anything can happen.

Cos some of them will end up getting shot down most likely and then you've got a shitstorm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,549 ✭✭✭Raoul Duke III

I think the splits in the GOP are being very starkly exposed here.

You have hawks calling Biden 'weak' (which is outrageous given that the traditional approach was to always back the president in foreign policy at times like this) and demanding further and harsher actions against Russia. Then you have the headbangers, including former President Trump, who are frankly all over the place and totally lacking in coherence.

Watching a bit of Sky news here and the same yesterday morning, Mark Austin seems a bit vacant at times, mind you if I could hear bombing and gun fire within ear shot I would be vacant also. The journalists and their crew really have a tough job.

i saw those photos. Why is the guy in civvies to the left of the soldier on the phone not holding him at gunpoint. The civvie has a rifle. Could these be Ukraine soldiers?

edit: the below tweet is not related to above comment

He knew that from the beginning

UKraine is not a NATO member and cant use article 4/5

Putin's greater concern was with Europe, as expected Germany and a few more are delivering for him and the sanctions that could really hurt are being blocked.

Russia has long isolated itself from America.

The more I think about this the more I think the powers in Europe need to get involved in this. I never thought Putin would be stupid or crazy enough to go into Ukraine like this. Couple that with his greater Russia ramblings over the last couple of years it's obvious to me that none of the former Warsaw pact countries are safe. We'll be up against the same shite again.

A large bulk of Russian armour is now exposed on the plains of Ukraine. NATO needs to provide air cover and send in A10s and attack helicopters and destroy them.

Especially when in this case, the adversary is more likely to go with that option (probably in a "limited" tactical way first rather than strategic) than any of his recent predecessors if he feels there's an advantage to be gained.

The problem is that once weapons like that are used, there's no real way to go back.
