    Disadvantage of teaching:

May not get CID for a couple of years. Although after a certain number of years, it could be 5 but I’m open to correction, you get all of the befits anyway.

Abuse from pupils (thick skin needed).

You can’t shuffle papers and pretend to be busy like in many jobs if you’re under the weather.

You may have to relocate to get a permanent job.

No private sector perks like VHI.

Annual leave must obviously be taken in line with school holidays. So no nipping off in November etc.

Frequent nervous breakdowns due to abuse, no support from parents, my little Johnny or Lucy is an angle (sic).

    Advantages:

Guaranteed pay rises, starting salary of 38k per year, rising to 70k after 20ish years.

Retire on half your salary with a lump sum of 1.5x€70k. This rises yearly with inflation and in line with incumbent teachers’ pay. This is in addition to state pension contributory.

Unlimited sick days with full pay. You get several without needing dr cert.

Only 22 hours max of class time.

17 weeks annual leave with extra days on top. You can carry these over indefinitely.

You can take “gap years” and still maintain your pension by paying a small percentage of your yearly salary.

    Undeclared income from grinds.

Unlimited sick days? Fake news, friend.

There are many, many limits on sick leave, including limits for people who get cancer or other severe long-term illnesses.

    The above is false.

A public service occupational pension of half salary includes the State Pension.

PS do not get 50% of final salary work pension + State Pension.

@salonfire not moaning, simply stating a breakdown of my working week to inform others. Also, we don’t get paid for holidays, our wage for the time worked is simply spread over 12 months (if you’re lucky enough to have a contract). No need for hostility.

So the salary is for 8 months of the year?

So the starting pay is 38k for 8 months work, 1,100 a week? Significantly higher than the average full time weekly equivalent salary in Ireland.

@mystic86 that is before any deductions. I currently earn between €300-€600 a week, but that's due to the nature of my contract. Your salary depends on your contract. Again, just giving the information. :)

Who's salary doesn't have deductions applied to it..

Nobody’s. I was just correcting your incorrect figure of €1100 a week. That is before deductions if someone is lucky enough to have full hours.

    "average full time salary"

Why on earth would you compare the salary of someone with 5 or 6 years of fulltime third level degree education with a jacks scrubber?

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

Then maybe teachers can stop with their lies that they are badly paid.

The jacks scrubber is poorly paid. The teacher is not.

To the OP, is there some reason why you have to work for the state? Just wondering as you have either teaching or CS. There are plenty of other things you can do with your degree.

They are poorly paid given their qualifications and responsibilities.

    Duh.
