I just had a look at frq.fm and it doesn’t appear to be running anymore. Their last post on Instagram was from July. Bauer must have axed it which is a shame. I suppose we’ll only continue to see presenters coming from anywhere but radio.

I wonder how hard it is to get into Pulse or RTE Jnr for new talent looking to get experience between college and commercial radio or how people are going about getting in now.

I never knew that about Emma Power. Thanks for the info

Although it was too late in the day imo, the opportunity was there under Dan Healy in the mid 2010s to turn 2fm into a proper youth station but instead it ended up as a hogue pogue that didn't satisfy anyone.

Dont know when I listened to 2FM last , but I was in the car this evening after 5 and started flicking around the stations, wasn't passing much notice on what station it was but there was song after song after song playing. It turns out in was 2FM and with the music that was playing it was like back in CPs in Galway in the early 00s. Sean Paul, Dr Dre, Daniel Beddingfield, Eve,Missy Elliott. If that is the music Laura Fox is going to be playing then I will be tuning in again.

2FM got caught in a mid-life crisis where the listeners which made the station popular were getting 'too old' (for want of a better phrase) and it was trying to appeal to new listeners without losing too many of the older ones. Its identity needed a complete reset especially with the establishment of Gold.

It's now firmly establishing its identity but competitors in key markets (SPIN, iRadio, Red etc) are already way ahead of them, so now after doing all of that they have to play catch up against very popular, well-established stations.

One thing you can certainly say is 2fm play waaaaayyyyyyy more music than its competitors

Once Tracey Clifford starts, the shows/music gets much better than the morning to be fair....listened to the two johnnies ad a few times and juding by that clip they are going to be painful to listen to with the gaa/cultchie "humour"

2fms market share in Dublin is now 3.5%, the same as Classic hits , how the mighty big station has fallen.

I wonder why Jennifer Z's show isn't doing well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,954 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Because she is certainly NOT gerry ryan and mid-morning radio has changed since his passing in 2010 anyway.

On the strength of their FM frequency ..If RTE Gold with Will/Rick, was relayed in this timeslot - 2FM would perform better.

    Bring back Moloney after Midnight.

You see, and this is the same among all other radio stations, unless a radio employee either mans decks in a night club regularly, or produces their own dance music, I wouldn't class them as a "DJ" I'd call them "a presenter". Jenny Greene, Claire Beck, Mark McCabe etc, they're all Djs. Carl Mullan, Ian Dempsey, Jen Z, Ray Foley, Dermot and Dave, they are all radio presenters as far as I'm concerned.

    This too shall pass.

Louise McSharry whinging and using twitter to garner sympathy. She was asked to keep her news of her ending to herself for one more week!

Yet she spilled the beans. "I was going to be on my own"... "how could I do a show at the weekend without telling my work mates?"....give me a break. Toughen up ffs. Stop being so mentally weak.

And you're in Ireland, no one calls it "trash"!

her twitter during the Aisling Murphy murder was another red flag...her twitter would turn anyone off hriing her

Totally agree with you there with the whing comment. I came across her whinging about something non radio related (not on social media) and I thought to myself how silly she sounded. More of a don't you know who I am and why wasn't I informed of this etc etc.

Couldn't listen to her on the radio, especially after seeing her above performance, and then to hear how whinging about her being sacked and how disgraceful it was vindicated my earlier views on her.

Maybe Dan Healy directed his comms / sacking to her via her agent as she was too difficult to deal with face to face? Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Pity they aren't keeping Laura Fox on the drivetime show. She's been very good this week.

Much better and listenable than two gimps doing a cultchie impression

In fairness to her she spent a lot of her life in Chicago. I remember when she started first on 2FM that she had a hybrid Irish/American accent which she herself described as a “hodge-podge” on air.

Dan Healy did nothing wrong, but of course everyone hates RTE so they could cure cancer and there'd be fault somewhere.

Here it is in her own words. Her actions were of someone who is a spoilt whinging baby who can't compromise.

In short, 2fm told her on the Tuesday she wasn't being renewed, they would let her announce it but told her keep quiet for now. She wanted to do it Friday. They said wait another week and she threw a hissy fit giving a bunch of nonsensical immature reasons for then releasing the news.

Totally agree, i never heard her before but i listened to most of her shows last week and today i thought she was really good playing a nice mix of music, ill be switching it off when the two johnnies start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,721 ✭✭✭✭flazio

I can see a little where she's coming from here. Being told your sacked but having to keep it to yourself, I mean it's not like it's the number 1 prime show of the weekend. If it's coming to an end let her announce it.

Seems like Jenny Greene got similar treatment and she is arguably the biggest name at the station at the minute. There must be some hard ball contract negotiations going on at both Today and 2FM.

    This too shall pass.

If you read everything in full, you'll see that she was contacted by her agent, not by Dan Healy about it all. It seems management didn't have many dealings with Louise at the weekends (one wonders if that is the case across the schedule). Interesting how some DJs like Keith Walsh manage to get a years notice while others get a week or two plus the expectation to keep it secret. Contacts surely, but hardly fair to the listeners*

(* yes, no doubt some of you will sneer at the ratings drop, but it's surely an increase on virtually nothing before Louise took the slot)

Respect and dignity should be expected in jobs across the spectrum, and if someone does something very wrong (look at Charlie Sloth when he was fired from BBC Radio 1/1Xtra a few years ago), it's only right to shut them off the air quickly. Louise and the listeners she did built up (whether you, fellow boards.ie radio forum scroller enjoyed it or not, there was an audience) deserve a bit of respect. Radio is a fickle business, but so is the ability of the listener to switch a station off for good.

I haven't heard Laura Fox at all yet so I don't know how in-character this interview is but one thing is for sure, it doesn't make me want to listen.

"The Galway girl – part of a new generation of DJs whose show starts this weekend – told the Irish Mirror: “Why can’t we be good looking and talented on air? Don’t be afraid of our sexuality.

She paid tribute to her colleagues on 2FM – such as Jennifer Zamparelli and Doireann Garrihy – adding: “I’m swimming in a sea of sexy presenters right now in 2FM.”"

Does it really matter what a presenter on the radio looks like?

it’s the down to earth relatability on display here that I’m positive will be a sure fire ratings winner!
