I was thinking of maybe gorilla glueing the edge of the metal ring before fitting back on the black o ring? Any ideas apprciated.

Instead of Gorrila glue, clean and dry both surfaces with some paper towel (or bog roll if it's handier) then stick the metal ring back into position with a smearing of clear silicone or clear tec7. This can then be removed later when accessing the drain without doing any damage to the shower tray.
