How come Ireland doesn’t know it’s own prison capacity?

Was reading a report on the prison and law enforcement systems of the EU and nearby countries. In the section on amount of prisoners per country compared to the amount of prison space available in those countries, Ireland was the only country with no data on its available prison space. How the hell is a country not able to know it’s own prison space availability?

Because the country is run by mongos who don't know their arse from their elbow.

They get away with doing **** all so they continue to do it and couldn't give a shite.

That's because there's an indeterminate number of people in a metaphorical prison.

Then you have all the people in a psychological prison of their own making.

And of course those who are imprisoned by their past.

does the report state ireland doesn't actually know? or is that your conclusion?

e.g. this appears at one point in the report: "For Belgium, Germany, Ireland, France and Cyprus data are missing for all three years."

there is a difference between not knowing capacity and it not appearing in a report.

It is my assumption since Eurostat can’t show it on the graph. It’s shows all those other countries you mention.

by your logic (or lack thereof), germany and belgium don't know their female prison population either.

The number of prisoners our prisons can accommodate obviously is well known by the department of justice. To suggest that they don't is ridiculous. I've no idea why the report didn't have the information.

Pre Covid-19 times the number of prisoners & the number of spaces that our prisons can accommodate didn't tally. Just about every prison in the county had far more prisoners than the prisons can officially accommodate. I wonder was the government withholding the information because of the inhumane conditions & overcrowding. For example in Cloverhill they had 3 to a cell designed for 1 person. You could be eating your dinner while another prisoner is taking a dump a few feet away in the same room.

Of course the Dept. of Justice and IPS know the prison population, as another poster already said.

Its ball park between 3,800 and 4,300.

Between remand, TR and other open centres, prisoners detained in hospital and central mental hospital, lifers in the community.

As of Friday 4th Feb 2022, total in custody is 3,855, total prisoner's in system 4,307.

This info is widely accessible online , no need for a FOI application.

It was prison capacity not population I raised questions about. The replies I’ve received are fair enough. It did seem suspicious that such a well sourced survey with population and capacity data for every EU country and other countries in Europe but outside the EU, didn’t have Irish capacity data.

How come Ireland doesn’t know it’s own prison capacity?
