Don't worry about planning. Fill your roof.

I'm currently on 20 of them and hopefully going to 26 by the end of the year.

Regarding planning, I have been chasing that up (as someone who is looking to install this year) and I posted the reply from the relevant minister in January, here: https://www.boards.ie/discussion/comment/118495939/#Comment_118495939

Basically, yes, they'll be relaxing planning regs, but they need to do due diligence around areas with planes overhead? No idea on timeframe, although this had been promised for 2021...

promised for 2021..... Jesus lads like no rush. I have lost all hope with the Governments Climate Action Plan. And don't give me the pandemic line of BS for the delays.

This is a result of charging the battery on night rate.

I've started looking into solar myself lately, for first quote last night. 3.35 kw system, 10 panels. No battery & no hot water as I've an existing system for water. €8,890 seems a bit high, am I being ripped off?

    Edit: Munster Region

100% RIPPED OFF. Did the company have a 8 in its name?

If they throw in another 20 panels then it's a decent deal.

    Thanks bullit_dodger,

Yes we are high consumers in this household but that is the only bill. No oil, no gas. no coal no electric showers etc.

All our hot water is sourced from the heat pump/thermal solar panels with backup immersions (all automated to use night rate only).

Cooking/baking (electric oven going 6/8 hrs a day), kids thinking they need to empty the hot water tank to shower successfully, lots of computing/gaming stuff going on, minimum 2/3 cloth washes and cloths drying (both on night rate when feasible) and 3 dishwasher runs per day (at least 1 run over night every night) and big change in day time heating as we now are both WFH with lots of techie stuff running all day and that is not going to change.

I spent the last 12 months trying to reduce consumption and have weeded a few issues around the heat settings but there is probably a bit more to go there.

Possibly more LED lighting but it looks like we can assume that my base consumption is circa last years figures around 16000kWh.

Thanks for spending your time and giving me great guidance.

    Really appreciate that.

    Hi Garo,

Really appreciate your advise and as been advised by a few 8 to 10KW system is where I need to go.

The DIY battery - I spent hours last night reading the thread on that and that looks like a very interesting proposition. - and well within my DIY capabilities......

lots to think off - really appreciate your guidance on it......

Between Reddit & boards I've lost track of what I've read. Thanks for the tip

I was due a call out from them. Didn't like the all centre vibe I was getting off them. So between here and Google I cancelled them.

Definitely do your LED conversions. Those are DIYable and the best bang for buck. I shaved about 1000 kWh p.a. by changing all my halogen downlighters to LED. You make your money back in less than a year if doing it DIY.

    Hi guys,

New at this, appreciate advise on this quote :

12 Panal (Peimar, pmax 365w) with inverter, Eddi and 4.8kw battery,

Cost with battery €10,900 after grant, without battery €8,350.00

    Thanks !

Ouch. That's a hard pass from me.

What part of Ireland are you in.

Like garo - I can't stress this enough also.

Before I started I'd say I must have had 30-40 halogen "spot" blubs, each using 50 watts a pop. So when the lights were turned on in the kitchen (8 bulbs) that's 400watts right there. Thing about lights of course is that they are so innocent. When looking around the house, you always look at the washing machine and the tumble dryer as naturally these type of units are huge consumers, but of course lights are often on 6-8 hrs a day, and that's quickly adds up

I ripped most of them out and replaced with Philips Hue equivalent bulbs. Granted at ~€30euros a pop (there are cheaper ones) not a cheap move, but instead of 400 watts I'm now at 32 watts in the kitchen. I kept a couple of the old halogens on a few rarely used "dimmer switches". The philips are dimmable of course via alexa/google home, but those ones are so rarely used, I left them "as is".

Important to do this type of work as ultimately it helps size your system correctly and the quotes are better targetted to the system you need as opposed to over purchasing.

Sorry but it just p1***s me off when people post quotes which are so clearly off the wall.

Can we maybe get a Google Sheet and put one section with installers and the area of the country they cover, and maybe some quotes which people got from those installers

And lights are one of the many components in a BER rating. Halogen/filament lamps will hold you back. i.e.

    1. LOW ENERGY BULBS

Using low energy light bulbs throughout your whole house will increase your BER Rating. Low energy compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use 20 per cent of the energy that traditional (incandescent) bulbs use, while supplying the same amount of light. Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights use only 10 per cent of that of an incandescent bulb. Not only will this reduce your energy bills, but will improve your BER Rating, thereby improving the appeal of your home to prospective buyers or tenants.

If installing a pv setup. Do you need a battery if you refuse a smart meter? Someone mentioned somewhere their old meter spun backwards at times when generating more than using.

I am currently being ripped off by Flogas who have given me 4 price hikes and Perla Polite Soapsuds my unit rate in under 12 months. I was paying 16c a unit, they are currently ripping 32c a unit off me. Be nice to see some of that come back, use some of their own legal jargon quotes against them, as one of their nice operators put it to me when I challenged their ludricious price hikes - "You didnt have to use the electricity"

Any advice on keeping old meters?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8 mchief

I'll be cancelling myself tomorrow. Got a decent quote today for a far superior system IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭MAULBROOK

Keep the old meter as long as you can if you have solar fitted, spinning backwards is not your problem.

ESB will be out to replace it with a digital or smart meter. I managed a month till it was changed, a friend of mine put them off for 3 months.

As for FloGas cancel the contract and find a new supplier asap, yes there will be termination cost normally €50 but check the t&c.

You don't need a battery but I recommend them, min of 5kw (don't shoot me its just my opinion).

This is a quote I got yesterday

4.32 kwp system and will produce 3400 kwh annually.

This system will include the following:

    •  12 x 360w REC panels

    •  Hybrid inverter

    •  5kwh battery storage

    •  My Energi hot water diverter

    •  Roof mounting equipment

    •  All labour works

    •  All electrical testing and commissioning

    •  BER Certification

    •  Online monitoring to see each day exactly what your system is producing

The total cost of the above system will equate to €12,000.

This system will qualify for a €3,000 SEAI Grant so €9,000

About €1,500-€2,000 overpriced I'll ballpark it. Drop me a DM and I'll send you on 2x companies to give a try with. Nothing to lose, but potentially €2000 to save :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭MAULBROOK

It definitely can be bettered, its not the worst but other options are available

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,689 ✭✭✭THE ALM

The solar performance spreadsheet bullit_dodger setup can be viewed and shows a list of installation details that people have got and prices for same, at least then people can see what systems have been installed and at what cost and look at comparable setups.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,890 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Just a suggestion but when posting quotes could people state the total kWp of the system? Number of panels and wattage doesn't really matter. Its the total that determines what constitutes a good price.
