Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Building a new wheel with old hub

I have a set of campag wheels (ventos) that the front rim is worn out on. I am wondering is it possible to buy campag rims to replace this and if not if it is possible to build a different rim on this hub (open Pro or similar)? Spokes are straight pull.

Just as a bit of a project. And also sustainability. Seems a bit crazy to bin hubs and spokes because of rim wear.

    Cheers. Matthew

just had a quick look, the ventos are 18 hole at the front, and 18 hole rims don't seem available on a couple of the usual (online) retailers; i couldn't find any rims available in 18 hole versions. campy don't seem to sell replacement rims, certainly not to retail?

Not sure it is a great idea for a first wheel build.

If you can get replacement rims you'll be able to reuse spokes; if you get a different rim the ERD will likely be different and therefore different length spokes will be needed.

If you want to build a wheel, maybe start with a 32/36 design built 3 cross. Starting with 16 spokes built radially, and the rear 2 cross/radial is going to be really really difficult to get right.

Most of the wheel build guides recommend high spoke count, 3 cross for amateur wheel builds for good reason.

I had a set of hubs of a Campag neutron wheels. I ordered a set of rims from BTLOS in China. You customise the entire rim ie what finish (matt or gloss carbon) and spoke hole drillings and the make the rims to order.

When I got the rims circa 6 weeks later I dropped the hubs and rims down to Lukaz in APex cycles and he organised spokes and nipples and built them .

Its not a cheap process and the hubs would want to be worth as I reckon it probably set me back all in all about 700.

    Thanks Everyone.

Seems difficult for that hubset/rim. Its a result of the unsustainable age we live in I guess.

    Regards,

    Matthew

I would go talk to a good wheel builder. If you are not in a crazy hurry a good solution is possible for sure.
