TCD Gambling study €10 gift card for participation

Hello all, I'm conducting a study with TCD on gambling and metacognition. Metacognition is the awareness of one's own thinking and mental processes. We need at least 25 gamblers to participate in the study to give us useful data to help understand the role of metacognition in gambling and problem gambling.

All the information should be covered in the following link, but if you have any questions feel free to ask. This is a not for profit scientific study motivated by an interest in helping understand gambling and any possible underlying mechanisms. The whole study should take less than an hour to complete. After the initial survey you will asked to download the Neureka app and play a gamified task which measures metacognitive efficiency.

Thanks FiftyP, unfortunately the metacognitive task is only available on the app through a smartphone.

Is it the hassle of downloading the app or you don't have a smartphone?

My phone is old and warning me about a lack of space in the ROM so I don't want to bloat it up more and even then I'm of an age where desktop computers are just what I'm used to.

Completely understand, the movement towards having everything through apps is not ideal for me either and is also a potential limitation of this study in terms of age demographics.

You might be the one to ask The Big Easy, do you know of any work done on gambling's effect on cognitive activity in the elderly? I know there's plenty of stuff about keep active as you age, both physically and mentally, so I'm wondering if this has ever been looked at with something like horses, poker or even just card games?

As you said there's plenty about brain games and activities helping maintain your cognitive abilities, but nothing that I know of dealing specifically with gambling.

There's a study in the Gerontologist that says that playing cards is as effective as playing puzzles and reading on maintaining cognitive functioning and lowering Alzheimer's and dementia risk.

The Neureka app, that was created by the Gillan Lab at Trinity that I'm doing the study, with was originally developed with lowering the risk factors for dementia.

It'd be an interesting enough all around study, I'd guess (at least it would to me if I was in the sphere.) How the mental, physical and sociological side of gambling, horse racing especially, all aids people. Getting to the pub, working out your bets and the social side of meeting friends and having a physical space where you see people.

The days I watch the horse racing in a pub mid-week there's a lot of retired people meeting their friends and having a bet in the odd race or two. And they'd be far more clued into all the horses having watched racing pretty much every day.

Just a last push on this everyone. Thank you so much to those that have participated already, it really is much appreciated. My recruitment for the study ends next week and I'm just a handful short of having enough participants, so if anyone is on the fence about participating please do so now!

I'm really hoping to have enough data to make this research worthwhile and help to understand the role of metacognition and self-esteem in gambling.
