I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like it's an extension for Sidero - probably tied to the huge investment/rampup they announced a few months ago.

Can recommend Liam Murray Construction, Gerry Duignan construction and Gabriel Seery construction. All would have fairly full books at the moment though.

    Thanks for that 👍

Really appreciate it. Totally appreciate that whoever we go with that there will be a wait. That's the nature of the market and demand at the moment. On the brightside, that demand means I can take some time in talking the in-laws around to completing a grant application and having a good look around to get a list of all the jobs that need addressing.

    Thanks again.

If you are going with seai grant, they used to publish a list of "approved" contractors. And you can only use those approved contractors for any work grant applicable. I'm pretty sure none of 3 I listed will be seai approved... They get too much work themselves!

In my own experience with seai, they are not worth engaging with. I had dealings with them 10 years ago to upgrade my heating at the time. It was cheaper to go with local seai unapproved contractors, than to get seai approved contractors and claim the grant. Maybe it's improved since, but proceed eyes wide open.

It's not the SEAI, rather the home adaptation for disabled/elderly grant. Grant application is via the CoCo and it won't impact the need for the work to be done in any event. Thanks again for the help.

My money is on Boxer. But it will be tight.

I think the fact that the seat was forced into a vote despite the son nominating Boxer signals a lot of negativity towards Boxer on that Council.

After losing the vote Moran is more than a bit sour

Former junior minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran loses out in political comeback bid

Boxer's reaction to loosing out on the seat is disappointing. But it's much like the same reaction when he lost his ministerial seat - lash out and blame everyone else. That's not going to go in his favour when the next elections come around. As much as he has undoubtedly done a lot for Athlone, outbursts like that aren't going to be forgotten by the electorate.

It's my opinion that he got his son to run for the last local election, knowing he'd get in cos he's Boxer's son. Junior Boxer would then keep the council seat warm until such time as Boxer wanted it. But the plan has blown up in their faces.

His canvassers even said it to me on the doorstep that it was perfect way to make sure Boxer could keep his seat on the council.

Which makes it even funnier that Hogan came 2nd on the basis of the seat being kept for him ... but then he came 2nd to Hogan when it was time to step back in.

I don't agree with independent nominating a replacement and it being nodded through. There is scope for corruption and the selling of seats. I am glad that it didn't work for Boxer as it sets a precedent for other independents. Boxer couldn't have expected help from Fianna Fail so he was pretty much doomed from the outset. The taxi business will probably improve for him with the restrictions lifted.

Yeah cooption has always had a bad smell about it. Delighted to see it getting knocked back

Can anyone recommend someone who gives leaving cert science grinds (chemistry) in the area?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,751 ✭✭✭veryangryman

Boxer probably needs a nixer, give him a bell.

    Kidding...😊

Un-necessary low blow aimed at a man who had the courage to publicly acknowledge his reading difficulties, despite which, he served the country at a national level. Some ppl never miss an opportunity to demean others!

What are you in about reading difficulties, literally nobody brought attention to this except you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,109 ✭✭✭TomOnBoard

    Seriously?

That post was a disgusting dog-whistle to the anti-Boxer brigade on here. Unless you've lived under a rock - and I am absolutely sure the O.P. has not - Boxer's issues with dyslexia have been well - aired and are well known... Or are you suggesting the O.P. Is not aware of them, and his/her comment was entirely co-incidental? Puh-lease!! Someone enquiring about where to get grinds has absolutely nothing to do with Boxer, but the smart-assed low blow from the OP was childish, hurtful and above all, discriminatory!

If this local forum is going to accept bullying in ANY form, then I have zero interest in it!!!

In over 15 years in and around Athlone, I didn't know (nor care) what ailments Boxer has. Also, didn't and don't live under a rock. Perhaps, it was a joke about Boxer not getting the council seat, so has time on his hands and could give grinds? Only you seem to have read it and seen it as a dig at him and dyslexia. Puh-lease quit the assumption that your take on it is the defacto, only take.

Lets hope this isn't the sort of level and comment that this thread is going to descend to.

If you have an issue with a post, use the report button, otherwise only thing to say to your mini-rant is LOL

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,109 ✭✭✭TomOnBoard

Thanks for that helpful advice. Yes, I have issues, and yes, I have now reported all posts with which I have an issue. I'll leave it to the Mods to consider and sort it all out..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,074 ✭✭✭AdrianG08

I didn't think my post would cause so much issues, there was no reference to Boxer Moran in it, I simply was seeking advice on a contact for grinds (still am).

Nor did I interpret the responding poster to be taking a pot shot at Boxers dyslexia, I took it as poking fun at him missing out on his seat, and the offence caused is completely over the top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,751 ✭✭✭veryangryman

For the record I did not know boxer had that and thankfully most of the crowd here know that no offence was caused.

Welcome to the Internet. Hang on its a weird ride. Sheesh

Great to see this happening but 6 stations is not a hell of a lot, but I guess its fine for the purpose of a trial.

Can anyone recommend a nice place to eat in town/just outside? Would be looking for a private room, dinner for approx 9-10 people.

I know Athlone Springs does a private room for parties, but can anyone else think of other places offering this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,751 ✭✭✭veryangryman

The Prince kinda does this in that the upstairs is always empty. You could book an area in it. Not a room per se but fairly secluded from the rest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭tractorporn

We had my little ones christening in the restaurant of the Sheraton, they closed it off and did not allow people from the carvery up for that time. That was in 2018 so things might have changed since. There's always the small room in the Wineport either or Glasson Golf if the smaller room is there after the refurbishment.

Just to push aside the tumbleweed....

Answering my own question, the office built inside the old Unique building on Tuam Road appears to belong to Alexion, spotted a poster for them inside it.

Little weird it being viewable from roadside. Confidentiality risks etc? He say's while working in his kitchen
