That is a blatant misuse of statistics, She is trying to say only692 people died from Covid. No. Another 5109 with underlying conditions did. I assume some would have died in the period anyway but it is likely the vast majority died because Covid exacerbated their underlying condition. Its a pity we don't have some sort of Fact Checking body.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fail have certainly removed the restriction around Cabinet confidentiality throughout Covid.

Who is leaking everything??? Harris and Leo?

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

More leaky leakys, they can't help themselves, today's politicians are obsessed with social media and getting the likes.

Apart from which, why is it worded as an announcement? It's not her role to announce it!

"Justice Minister Helen McEntee has gotten the jump on Taoiseach Micheál Martin with the announcement of restrictions being loosened."

"In a since-deleted video on Instagram, McEntee says a significant amount of Covid-19 restrictions are set to be removed.

“I am so pleased to be able to say that as of 6am tomorrow, the vast majority of restrictions that have been in place for almost two years now, on and off, will be lifted,” said McEntee.

In the post, McEntee says that it is due to people’s perseverance in the last two years that has allowed us to reach this point."

You know rosters were done at the start of the week right? Rosters where staff already have 40 hours. The fact they're doing this on a Friday for Saturday is insane. Owners and managers are just going to expect staff to do extra hours and "make it up" to them later. Ok for part time hourly staff but usually you still need full time staff on with them to do the behind the scenes/deal with problems/cash up side of things.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to be done with the cert checking and finding people seats. I'll miss table service as a customer but hey-ho. But this was handled with zero thought about staff of these businesses.

I would have liked to enjoy it tonight, but they are forcing me to wait until tomorrow!

Pubs should bring pint prices back to March 2019 prices for the day that's in it.

I think once the nphet letter was published (leaked by athlone sorting office) then the gov were on hiding to nothing trying to keep some restrictions in place.

Well I can only tell you what the bar staff in my local were saying last night - really hoping things could open tonight.

And, like plenty of others have already said, nobody is forcing anyone to open longer tonight or tomorrow. We're talking about not forcing them to stay closed earlier than they want to.

Your local's staff must be paid hourly. There's plenty of staff in the industry on salary - like many other jobs, who will be a lot less happy. It isn't those staff that decide opening hours and if you were scheduled from 2 to close tomorrow you'll just be expected to stay until the new close (and still get paid your standard wage).

I'm lucky I'm part time behind the stick these days so I'll just have extra paid hours tomorrow (though it is suddenly a 13 hour shift to mentally prepare for) but I know plenty in the industry that are now looking at a 45-50 hour week for 40 hours of pay that didn't need to happen.

Again I don't want to be Mr Downer. This a great day and I can't wait to get to go meet up with friends or visit people without any restrictions. I just wish they done it a little smarter, like at the end of a week.

I don't know of any hospitals that allow visitors though I've only had relatives in 4 of them over the last while. Hopefully all hospitals allow visitors soon

According to what I've read on Twitter, if you're happy about today's news you're also happy that 5 million people have died from covid. I've seen a lot of "people only want pints and don't care about de vulnerable" type posts too.

I very much enjoy replying to these people, it's like shooting fish in a barrel 😁

The pints thing is such a ridiculous thing at this stage. It just shows their ignorance - bring everything back to pints rather than acknowledge livelihoods etc.

    I love pints

Why do they always have a segment with Michael Lehane when they know they are going to cut him off midway through it?

You can actually hear the excitement in his voice about giving an announcement that doesn't make him public enemy No.1 for once.

    A good day no doubt.

Wearing masks is no big deal happy to carry on with that tbh.

I will miss the spacing and capacity limit in cinemas I won't lie but hey :) will just continue to go early in the day.

Will be interesting to see what the phased return to offices will look like.

Did Michael get taller? Amazing what a bit of confidence can do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,402 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

Will masks still be required when walking in and out of restaurants and all that jazz?

    Close contact isolation remains.

    Ridiculous

Lads is anyone else getting a bit emotional (in a good way)? I know we've had loads of false starts over the last 2 years, but this really feels like this is it.

I think we'll see more restrictions removed in 10 days time.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,462 ✭✭✭landofthetree

They will be gone in a few weeks. They are just for show.
