Mondeo temp gauge

So have a 2010 Mondeo diesel. Have noticed the temp gauge does not seem to be moving normally. It seems to be staying all the way to the left and not changing as driving. Just did Dublin to Kilcock return and it didnt budge. It wasnt working last week, then was working yesterday, then not today. Car serviced ok, expected heat from the heater is fine, just the gauge.

Car is fine otherwise.

Any ideas folks?

Could be stuck thermostat. Have you looked at the coolant level to rule out a leak or low level (do this when engine is cold to avoid injury).

Replacing thermostat looks a bit of a pain to access...

A few months back, the intercooler went. It mixed the engine oil with the coolant so contaminated the system. It was replaced and flushed but dont think the thermostat was changed. Maybe connected? Coolant level is fine and the timing belt and waterpump was changed last week. It is a mark 4 - pre facelift.

Does it pass initial test, when you turn ignition on? What temperature the computer can see?

The first part does not need the computer. Look the gauge moves or not.

If you are asking about a sweep at startup, I dont think it does that. Will check it tomorrow.

If the Temp gauge is sometimes working and sometimes not, I'd be looking at the coolant temp sensor. The only diesel mk4 engine that has one is the 2.0 litre, as stated in the Haynes manual anyway. Usually if a thermostat is stuck open or closed it won't move from those positions again and the reading on your temp gauge wouldn't be sometimes here sometimes there
