Thank you, I had started a thread on here previously about non-dealer garages that are up to speed on PHEVs / BEVs. Must dig it out and update as there seems to be a few more appearing.

Our own Ampera has bricked itself, won't move or accept charge. Is currently with BMG in Lucan but they're not having much luck so far

Sorry to hear it. And I don't think even any main Opel dealer (GM / Vauxhall / Chevrolet / Stellantis) here in the Republic is qualified / equipped to work on them?

If it doesn't work out with BMG you only have 2 options left if you want to get it back working. Bring it to Belfast or bring it to another indy. In the latter case, give MKW a ring but they will have very unlikely even seen any of those cars before in their garage

Anyone currently in the market for a 2018 Gen 2 Nissan Leaf, be careful if you get interested in a white Tekna (private sale) on DD.

Edit: also a 191 red Leaf (private sale) in Kildare, that has a history too.

Do your history checks if you are looking at these cars.

Can you elaborate as to what “history” these cars have ?

If you can’t, you should report the ads to DoneDeal and have them taken down. I’ve done this in the past and DoneDeal usually remove the ads and ban the seller within 24hrs once info is verified.

I have direct experience of this so felt I should comment.

I bought a 142 Gen 2 Leaf in a private sale on Done Deal in late 2017. Got it at 33k Kilometres on the clock and now has 90k and never given me an ounce of trouble. Sailed through a couple of NCT's along the way too. I recently had the car at a dealership as I was considering an upgrade as I need more range now and I asked the dealer to value my car while I looked around. I was shocked when he asked me if I imported it from the UK. I said no, that I bought it 2nd hand in 2017 and the previous owner must have.

Turns out the car was involved in a collision in the UK in 2016 and was classed Category D damaged which is minor repairable structure damage however the Insurance party and client obviously agreed to not pay for the repairs so in effect a write off.

So, it seems someone took the car and repaired it to a pretty high standard to the point you'd never know and exported it to Ireland. The fact that it passed the initial VRT and multiple NCT's gives me some reassurance but it's still not a nice thing to find out at this stage.

Even though the car is sound it still really impacts the sell on value of the car and if and when I do decide to move it on I'd have to be upfront with any potential buyer and pass on the history of the car.

So, NIMAN is right. Get your full background check, particularly to include the UK history.

That said, considering that the most important parts of an EV tend to be the battery pack / motor as long as a full inspection can be carried out you may be able to strike a real bargain armed with the full history. Not for everyone I know but my own experience lends itself to the fact that a bad history doesn't always necessarily mean a bad car.

Still wish I'd done my research back in 2017 though..

Well the white Leaf was a Cat S write off in the UK. From what I have read, this is damage that insurer thinks is worth more than value of car to fix. But it obviously was and exported to Ireland.

The red Leaf seller also admitted it has been damaged and repaired, and they have eng report and photos.

But once I heard this from both sellers, I lost interest immediately. Not worth saving couple of K for that. Considering neither have had to go thru NCT in Ireland, imagine if it was found their was serious structural issues and it failed?

I don't know the in and out of donedeal. Do sellers have to say in their advert that a car has been repaired? Or is it buyer beware?

Is it advertised on DD or Adverts? Or just here? If here, what is asking price?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭podge3

D'oh, forgot the price, can't edit it now.

Its €295. Also on Adverts. Free delivery to Boardsies.

    True.

The check I ran yesterday cos me £3.99 on eBay. It showed up the Cat S.

I had plans to travel this morning to look at it, so just shows it was well worth it.

I have never purchased any car without getting a car history check done.

Btw, someone asked where car was for sale. It's on Done Deal only from what I can see.

Could you post (or PM) me the details? If they pop up on the Irish EV Owners Buy & Sell facebook I'll hook them.

Definitely buyer beware if buying privately.

If buying from a dealer & you ask if its has been involved in a crash they are meant to tell you but who knows.

Last time i was buying a car I was looking at one 4 hours away so rang the dealer & first they said no issues they were aware of in the car.

A friend ran a check for me & then the dealer came back & said oh yeah it has been in an accident & sent photos. The car was underpriced for a reason

And the rest. Check NCT records, check finance records, check insurance records, have the car examined by a mechanic, etc.

The only protection a buyer has in a private sale is if they asked a question and the seller lied. Obviously the onus of the proof of this is on the buyer too. They would need to have this in an email or in a recorded conversation or something like that.

Also beware some sellers hide the car registration in ads. They sometimes do this to prevent cloning of their reg by uninsured drivers or getaway cars which has happened in the past, but it also prevents checks in advance. Some sellers will not give the reg over the phone. I typically do a check in that case once I see the car, as it can take up to 15 minutes to get results back. Don't trust private sellers, nor dealers. Even with warranty it can be difficult getting issues fixed. Main dealers with warranty are less risk and many EVs have long battery and drivetrain warranty. Ideally get a local mechanic to give it the once over. No genuine seller will refuse this. Mileage reduction clocking is very common particularly on UK imports.

I had just decided late last year that I was going to keep my car long term, but an opportunity came up and I'm not going to miss out on it. It looks like I have bought myself a newer Tesla Model S, so my one is now up for sale. Not advertised anywhere yet, but I will put an ad on DoneDeal in the next few days

Black 142 Tesla Model S P85. Bought by myself from Tesla Manchester as a Certified Pre Owned (CPO) car in March 2020. 101k miles, just out of bumper to bumper CPO warranty. But pretty much everything has already been replaced. High voltage battery (December 2020), door handles, both front halogen bulbs, rear light clusters, MCU, sunroof, wiper motors, brand new bonnet. CCS conversion. Brand new front brake pads and Brembo brake disks. Tesla carbon fibre spoiler, lots of carbon fibre in the interior

All options ticked like 23kW AC charging, air suspension, ultra high fidelity sound, free connectivity for life. The car still has battery / drivetrain warranty until July 2022

Asking price €37k or near offer. If you look at Tesla Model S for sale over here (and in the UK!) this is a pretty competitive price for a Performance Tesla

Car will get a full valet before sale is complete

The car has some interesting extras not mentioned above that I can include in the sale if my asking price is met

PM me if you are interested in a chat or if you want to come see the car. I'm in Lucan

Sweet Jesus unkel, that’s some amount of work for a relatively young premium car . I’d say had it not been in warranty, the eyes would bleed at the cost to replace those listed components. Were you just unfortunate I wonder, or is it indicative of a wider issue. All said, I love everything about that motor.

142 makes it a relatively early production model, less than 24 months from the first car produced. Manufacturing and assembly are difficult to do repeatedly with quality so it’s no surprise that some of the mechanical elements like door handles and sunroof needed to be replaced. The same to HV batteries. I’d be surprised if newer cars had anywhere near the same failure rate.

Musk has often said there are two replacements/alterations to the production line a month where they don't advertise and just get on with the improvements. The benefit of this is that any warranty work carried out in say, 2021 on a 2014 car will be with the latest (2021) version of the hardware so without the "weakness" of the failed part e.g. door handles now on V3 and a world apart from the weak V1 ones.

Indeed. These early Model S had several poorly made parts that didn't pass the test of time. These cars were also largely hand built. Thankfully Tesla continuously develop the parts (all are in house made, not outsourced like is (or was) the norm in the motor industry. So all parts are replaced by much improved parts. Which will not fail so quickly. So yes I got lucky that I got a 2 year bumper to bumper warranty with my car and it literally now is nearly as good as new.

I would have no problem buying this car myself as my first Tesla. Particularly now that there are independent garages popping up that can handle all the issues and you don't have to rely on Tesla (and their expensive bills) anymore

And on top of that, Tesla fix a lot of out of warranty cars for free or cheaply. I.e. if one of the door handles goes, they only charge for the part. Not for labour. And the most notorious problem, the MCU1 (computer) is now replaced completely free of charge, even out of warranty. But once these are done, they will likely never need to be done again.

    **** WANTED ****

Anyone on here thinking of selling a home chargepoint?

My type 1 tethered was sold with my Leaf, and I am tempted just to buy my own now and pay my local spark to fit it, forget about the seai grant for now.

I was thinking of buying a new Qubev from UK for £249, as I just want a basic charger.

But checking here first in case anyone might be upgrading?

    It's a type 2 I am after.

Nope. Only recently decided I was going to keep the car long term, as in at least several more years. But then an opportunity came up to buy the same car but a newer version with one feature I am very keen on. And I will just have to take that opportunity, very slim chance another one within budget will come along.

Im only joking. Im sure its a decent car at this stage. Its not exactly confidence inspiring for prospective buyers though. A Tesla extended warranty, like BMW do, would be useful I think. Do they offer that at all?

You can extend the original (new car) warranty when coming to it's end via a separate insurance policy.

When buying used off Tesla you get a meagre 12months warranty.

Gone are the 4 years used bumper to bumper warranty, I probably have one of the last ones
