Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Like what i have seen so far from him, which is very little from the footage i watched but thats the way it is. Hope he can get a top5 or sneak a win soon.

His T9 at the Dunhill links was a better finish than any of his 11 events on the challenge tour since turning pro.

Seems like a bit of a birdie machine which is a good sign, doubles appear quite often to which means he hasn't quite started racking up the top 10's yet.

An exciting prospect and very confident player, looking forward to his continued progress. Shame no Q school again this year.

He is -6 through 9 today on the Challenge Tour and in a 4 way tie at the top of the leaderboard. All the others on -6 have completed their rounds

EDIT: Turns out that was a mistake on the European Tour website. He was actually -4 after 9 which is the score he finished on

Superb recovery today to shoot 67 after having an 8 on his front 9.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭Speak Now

67s all the way for John, finished t3.

Only 2 shots off the winner, oh what might have been with 14 shots on hole 8 over the weekend.

    Eagle finish 🙂

The top 20 on the Road to Mallorca at the end of the season all earn promotion to the European Tour, John is currently 69th having jumped 19 places with his 3rd place finish this weekend. He's only played 11 tournaments though so getting the tour card this year may be too much of a challenge

69 and T17 after competing his delayed round 1 in Challenge Costa Bravo today, starts his second round soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭Speak Now

    Disappointing second round of 76.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Missed the cut this week unfortunately.

Projected to drop from 69th to 70th.

Top 70 would give him decent status for next seasons challenge tour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Despite the missesd cut he didn't drop any places so secures a good status on next seasons challenge tour for his first full season as a pro. Great achievement considering he only turned pro 5 months ago.

John will be in the Pebble Beach pro-am! It does mean he'll be missing the start of the Challenge tour in South Africa but hopefully that won't impact him getting a full European (DP) tour card

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Well he could always win that and get a full PGA tour card!

Big one this week for John Murphy, will be very interesting to see how he goes

I've checked online but can't see who he's paired with (a celeb or just a random rich amateur)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭paulos53

He has an all Irish fourball for the week which will hopefully help him.

Himself and Gerry McManus are paired with Seamus Power and Dermot Desmond

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,262 ✭✭✭big_drive

Should definitely make him more relaxed.

Those boys have big influence too, making a connection with them won't do him any harm down the line.

What are the strongest parts of his game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 737 ✭✭✭fearruanua

+3 after his opening round on the more difficult Spyglass.

Back to the grind for John in South Africa

Made the 54 hole cut in the Dimension Data Pro-Am but finished in 47th a full 17 shots behind the winner. Next up is the Cape Town open

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Salvadoor

4 under after 2 rounds today leaving John one inside the projected cut mark

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Salvadoor

Solid 18th place finish by John, it moves him up 21 places to 39th on the Race to Mallorca

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭ssbob

I think he is a brilliant talent - between himself and Tom McKibbon coming through and James Sugrue on the Alps tour as well - we have a new generation of Irish players who will hopefully start climbing the rankings.

18th place for John, disappointing final round 73 after a cracking 3rd round 64.

Up 7 places to 32nd on Order of Merit

  • Registered Users Posts: 602 ✭✭✭CSWS101

Anyone know where he has to finish to get his DP card?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1 antics212

Top-20 on the Road to Mallorca get full cards for 2023.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Playing the Byron Nelson on the PGA Tour this week, I presume on a sponsor's exemption. Good chance to boost his career and profile with a good week.

One hot week and he can skip a couple of levels pretty sharpish!

Think this was after he won the Byron Nelson award in college?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

That got him in last year I think, they must like him in that part of the world anyway!

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Salvadoor

unfortunately tied 3rd last after a 76 on a ridiculously low scoring course

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,192 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Think I heard over 400 birdies in round 1, mad stuff

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Salvadoor

Cracking 2 rounds for John at the Irish Challenge, 66 then a 67 (only 1 bogey in each round) to leave him 2 behind the leader

2 more good rounds would shoot him up the 'Road to Mallorca' rankings.

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Salvadoor

Another 3rd (joint) place for John this week in Finland after a sol 3rd place in the Irish Challenge.

Now up to 28th in Road to Mallorca

John finished 42nd and has qualified for the Grand final in Spain at the start of November

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Salvadoor

Disappointing +4 in round 1 of the Challenge Tour grand final today. Needs some miraculous golf over the next 3 days to make top 20 and get his DPWT card

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭Dbu

Very poor week for him. at a bit of a crossroads currently

  • Registered Users Posts: 142 ✭✭phelimb

What are the next steps now for John or anyone else who wasn't in the top 20 - do they automatically keep their Challenge Tour card (if that is a thing) for next year or have to re-qualify for it?

What about the lads who lost their DPWT cards - where do they go? Do they automatically get Challenge Tour cards OR must go to Q-School?

I tried googling it all but got very confused :)

John is one of 5 Irish players at the final stage of the Tour School starting on Friday - Paul Dunne, Gary Hurley, Cormac Sharvin and Jonathan Caldwell are the others. He is guaranteed a Challenge Tour card for next year based on his ranking from this season

Solid opening 68 (3 under) from John today in R1 of final stage. 15 pars and 3 birdies

1 round down, 5 to go. What a slog!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭paulos53

The top 25 and ties will get a tour card and that -3 puts him tied 14th to 27th after round 1. It looks like he played on the slightly easier of the 2 courses so tomorrow will be a better indicator of how he stands.

Gary Hurley is also going well on -2. The rest of the Irish need a good round to get them back in it.

    Caldwell Level Par

    Sharvin +1

    Dunne +2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭paulos53

Good rounds again today from Murphy (-3) and Hurley (-6). That puts Hurley in 5th place on -8 and Murphy is 15th on -6.

Caldwell is still in touch on -3.

Sharvin (+1) and Dunne (+3) need a couple of good days to make the cut after the 4th round.

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Salvadoor

Two good final rounds needed from John to get a card. He's currently tied 33rd and only 2 shots behind 25th. The last 2 rounds are on the 'easier' Lakes course so he'll need to go low

Hurley is in great shape at solo 6th, but unfortunately missed cuts for Dunne, Caldwell and Sharvin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 737 ✭✭✭fearruanua

The two double bogeys are really costing him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Salvadoor

+1 back 9 for an overall -2 69 after being -4 through 14 is tough. Needs a low one tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 737 ✭✭✭fearruanua

Yeah. currently 4 shots off a card. He'll need a 65 at least i'd say to have a chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 737 ✭✭✭fearruanua

    -3 through 10.

3 shots off at the moment. Needs another few red dots!!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Salvadoor

4 under now thru 13. another 3 red dots might do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 737 ✭✭✭fearruanua

    5 under through 15!!!!!!!
