Recently got a set of irons. 6’6 to nearly +2 inches extra. Swing weight D5 heavy and 5 iron is nearly 2 iron length. Hard to to control.

found gripped down on the shaft to produce more consistent strike has any found this in irons that were too long or is it just worth getting the shafts cut back and get fit for length.

Go on the ping website and use their webfit option. You will be asked for details on your height, wrist to floor, hand size etc. it should give you a reasonable guide to what length club is right for you. I find it very good.

With the extra length, for every 1/2 longer there is 3 more swingweights. For 2 inches longer it's possible the swing weight is E5, not D5. D5 while being a little heavy wouldn't be seen as overly heavy.

So you need to check the difference on a shorter length or the difference on a lighter head, as it could be either that's making a difference.

Length, generally, affects posture, too short you're bent over and it's harder to rotate, too long and you're standing up too much, it affects balance, too short can have too much weight on the toes and vice versa and it also affects strike, where you hit it on the face, too long can be heel or allover the face and too short can be toe.

Go shorter if it doesn't affect your posture, if it does you might have to get lighter heads.
