He’s not ‘the president’. Don’t mix up using a title that is a tradition with what you think happened a year ago.

"people thinking better of you when they can't see or hear you" is not the win you believe it is.

He really doesn’t understand what quotation marks are for.

It's like a post you'd see in this thread from Trump cultists.

The state of that 'statement'. He really is such a petulant spoiled child.

    Doesn't matter.

Democrats will see it for the terrorist act it was.

    Republicans will downplay it

His klan will UPplay it as taking back their country from libtards.

Fox will claim anyone who calls it a terrorist attack hates 'Murica.

Nothing will come from any of these. And if footage came out tomorrow of him running in at the head of the crowd of terrorists, braveheart-style and killing a cop, his approval rating among his klan will increase and the Republican Party will cheer him on.

It is hard to see where the Republican party will draw the line. Actually that is a good question (If I do say so myself 😀)

Where WOULD the Republican Party draw the line and disavow Trump? (If there is a line) . I would be interested to know.

When the numbers tell them that it is beneficial to do so?

There sure as hell isn't a moral point at which they'd say enough is enough

I think if it looks like there's definitely going to be a case against him (any of the many that are now proceeding), they'll drop him quick enough.

Hopefully there are still enough rational Republicans who believe in the rule of law. Maybe not though, in which case the whole country is fucked.

    Exactly ,

The GOP no longer have any firmly held beliefs or standards - Their only interest in Power & Influence (and the money that provides)

As long as Trump is useful to them in helping them gain Power/Influence there is absolutely nothing he could say or do that will prevent them from continuing to support him.

The immediate aftermath of January 6th shows that very clearly.

Initially they all assumed that the backlash against Trump would be significant so they all came out early with their statements condemning him etc. etc.

However , after a few days they starting to get the polling data and the feedback that told them that "Average Joe GOP Voter" was actually fine with what happened and still thought that Trump was awesome so they all contorted their way back over to Team Trump .

And as the GOP base hardens more and more behind the Big Lie , they get louder and louder in their support/protection of him , no matter what he does.

It certainly does seem that way alright, doesn't it. As conservative parties globally tend to market themselves as being the Protectors of Moral Standards it is startling how far they will go to protect/ justify their own moral "lapses". Of course each party does the same but, by their nature, more liberal party values are prone to change (That is another debate). But conservative parties tend to have a static, defined "Moral Standard". By their very definition they stand for X.

One only has to look at the UK at the moment. Every week it seems to emerge that they had another party and yet Johnson (actual CLONE of trump :) ) is still in power. Unsurprising.

Former President Donald Trump abruptly ended a live interview call with NPR reporter Steve Inskeep after he was challenged on his false 2020 election fraud claims.

    Coward.

The line SHOULD be the ridiculous, seditious, conspiratorial, lie about a "stolen election" that spurred a dangerous mob to assault Capitol Hill last year.

if that line isn't the one that's a mark of no return then it's difficult to see what would be.

Arguable that the line should have been well before that. There are over 4 year's worth of examples ..

Of course. But it should have the final line in the sand for anyone with even an ounce of honour and integrity.

True, however globally, hard-line conservatives also tend to be complete hypocrites. Very much do as I say, not as I do, regardless of whether it's in the sexual, political or financial sphere. IMO these people are simply fundamentally dishonest and do not engage in good faith (no pun intended), they feel they are engaged in a do-or-die battle with their mortal enemies and have no problem lying their heads off to reach their goals.

To me this is part of the reason Labour (and the moderates in general) keep getting screwed over by the right: they keep trying to engage somewhat honestly with the right, who simply despise them.

The GOP in the US and the Tories in the UK place no value on democracy. They would happily push the country into autocracy as long as they are the ones in charge. And they constantly gaslight their supporters, whom they despise only a little bit less than everyone else.

(edit - forgot this was the Donald Trump thread ...)

I used to think that militarism was one of those values in the U.S. was a pretty sacrosanct value, at least for eminent politicians to profess. They'd never have, for example, made light of the trials and tribulations of a man who'd spent around 5 years as an American POW in Vietnam. Trump did just that, and what happened? Nothing. If anything, it was just folded into his reputation as a man who shoots from the hip.

Imagine Obama saying that about McCain, and the absolute meltdown that would have followed on channels like Fox News. It would never have ended.

We need to stop asking where the line will be drawn with Trump, because there is no line. Trump doesn't need to toe a line in order to maintain Republican backing because it's the other way around. It's the Republican party who need to watch what they say lest they lose his backing. Trump can say what he likes and his base eats it up. Trump appeals to the true values of his base, which are darker and deeper set than god & country. It's really all about power. Power at any cost.

Trump was really bad but genuinely why do you care what he said about one of the worst war mongers of the last 50 years?

I know MSNBC etc and fellow echo chambers have whitewashed these awful people if they were slightly negative about Trump, but were you genuinely upset about a dreadful man in Trump baiting an another dreadful man in McCain?

In fairness, not even Ann Coulter cares about what Ann Coulter thinks.

"Main Stream Media is trying to influence politics" f*ckers like Hannity spent the last ten year screaming.

It's worth noting that Ann fell out of love with Trump failed to live up to the promises he made in the lead up to the 2016 election. She expected/hoped him to build a massive wall on the southern border pretty much immediately and various other things and lost faith in him pretty quickly.

The rest of us were aghast at what he went on with, she was aghast that he didn't go far enough. Let's hope she never gets a President she ends up being pleased with.

It's important what Trump said because it shows his complete disregard for decorum and the norms of American politics up until then, and, more worrying, just how readily his talk was accepted by his voters and news networks.

If he'd criticised McCain's track record of voting for unpopular wars, that would at least keep it on points of policy, but to trivialise the ordeal that McCain went through in Vietnam shows not only an incredible lack of tact but also willing ignorance. McCain was not considered a war hero just because he was captured but because of the ordeal he went through for 5 years and his principles not to use his family connections to gain preferential release. Unpopular war or not, that took some guts, and to make light of it and get away with it was pretty incredible.

Hannity is the mainstream media. They need to be called out every time they act like Fox is some lone, dissenting voice and its handful of viewers are different from the rest of the sheeple. It's the most popular news network in the US by a fair margin. Unless they're still going with their previous court argument that Hannity is entertainment and no sane person would believe anything they saw on his programme.

It really sounds to me like Coulter messed her career up, there, like she was banking on a Conservative backlash against Trump which never actually happened. I suspect that when she correctly fingered Trump as the man with the most chance of being Republican nominee, she thought she really had her finger on the pulse of America and unsuccessfully rolled the dice a second time.
