You really shouldn’t be surprised, he’s ulsters starting 9, this constantly happens on boards someone new comes along or a team sign a player and people move other players along particularly to France for a big pay day but it very rarely happens.

Definitely. Posters greatly overestimate the "big payday in France".

Cooney was turning 32 at the end of his existing deal, if he got any sort of decent extension he'd have taken it with both hands

My biggest gripe is Allison, Rea, McCann all excelled at u20s and few others in the past. If they had been elsewhere would they be further along in development?

Still put this down to lack of said depth and a higher baseline across the board for the squad. Ulster traditionally have always needed as strong as possible teams fielded leaving little room for development.

That has now changed but still behind the other provinces and I look at Munsters emerging talent and think they’ve leap frogged us again. With a similar age profile shadowing us.

Internationals come when squads raise their game and continue to peak!

Look at Prendergast at Connacht, was only on the bench in the 20’s team that McCann captained and he is a standout now at URC level and comfortable in Europe.

I know Rea came good in the last 2 European games but it has been a long time coming.

Being able to develop back five forwards from International Under 20 level to quality operators at URC never mind European level is a huge concern.

Gavin Coombes was behind Marcus Rea at u20 level, Paul Boyle was in the same year and Caelan Doris was a year younger if memory serves, although Doris was always a standout talent so comparing them might be unfair.

We've actually had a few backrowers in the u20 squads and none of them really fired a shot to suggest that they were pro players and our second rows have been depressingly poor both in terms of age-grade representation and academy development. So yea, it's hard to say we can trust our coaches yet to build a pack from the academy even if there's finally some decent talent coming through.

Couldn’t Agree more! Pendergast has been very good! Are first major issue is lack of squad depth even at URC level.

Ulsters second biggest issue is our senior players have very little competition and yet there is still no room to consistently blood the young guns.

That has changed this season to a degree with McCAnn.

And now by flook we have now seen some of Rea’s capability!

Hopefully with Vermeulen here, we go for more 6/2 splits and keep blooding McCann/Rea and maybe eventually even see Allison (can he be worse than Jones?).

Wasn't Marcus Rea Ireland U19 captain?

His progress has been painfully slow, but the signs now are promising.

It does frustrate me a bit when I see one or two bit part back rows getting the nod over the likes of Marcus Rea and David McCann. Maybe on that particular day they are the better choice, but thinking ahead I'd rather see these young lads getting a shot. More often than not they perform pretty well.

Can anyone really point to Marcus Rea playing badly for Ulster? Did he not get man of the match in his debut against Leinster 2 or 3 years ago?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,117 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Yes. Barrelled over a couple of Leinster lads to score the only try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 221 ✭✭ljsulster

The progress of Marcus rea and Azur Allison hasn’t been helped by all the injury issues they have had

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

Injuries aside I’m sure they’ve been fit for more than one Xmas interprovincial away to Leinster the past few seasons!

Ulster’s pack weakness means anyone time we could of played the academy players is like fighting with one hand tied behind your back!

As Bilaton said minutes wasted on part players could of been used on area’s, Allisons etc to help their progression

We were also going to go as string as possible - we dropped two games and have to get in the groove for Europe.

Expect us to be a bit rusty.

Ravenhill to host all ireland junior cup final in 3 weeks time

    Ballyclare v Clogher Valley January 29th 5.30pm

Only 2nd time final will be played in a non Leinster venue. Junior cup is running since 2006 and been won by Ulster clubs twice, Munster clubs twice with Leinster clubs winning 11 times.

Whatever about anything else but Ulster are by far best province at playing as many finals at all levels in their provincial ground as possible.

How are Tom Stewart and Lewis Finlay progressing? I thought they looked good for Ireland U20s a few years back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

Stewart looked good against Ospreys, just seems to be constantly ravaged with injuries.

Finlay looked very good for u20, have to agree. Just hasn't seemed to progressed with seniors or been given a chance. Ulster appear to have put their faith in Doak solely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,117 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Maybe it's that they don't want two inexperienced scrumhalves coming through at the same time, but I would have thought Finlay was quite capable of passing Shanahan by now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

Potentially, but if he's good enough that shouldn't be an issue.

Not sure Ulster should really be snubbing any talent. If he only ever peaked at Squad/euro level, it's still depth we could do with. Especially if Doak is destined for green jersey.

    Though who knows the rational.

He is in the Academy, I suppose, but I completely agree.

I just remember being pretty impressed with him over the U20 6N - fast delivery, heads-up gameplay, good trail lines - to the point where I'd expected him to be breaking through by now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

Also thought he was very good at U20s, think it was the England game in particular his ability to provide crisp passing to players running onto the ball at pace. At the time all I was thinking was this is exactly what Ulster didn't have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,150 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Yeah I'm surprised Finlay hasn't had a shot yet. I think he played in one of the Saracens matches in August or whenever it was.

To be fair Shanahan isn't getting much of a look in these days either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,028 ✭✭✭TRC10

Leinster would be smart to be sniffing around Lewis Finlay,

He's clearly a talented player but Ulster rate Doak ahead of him and Doak will be around for a long time.

Leinster don't have a top prospect scrum half in the academy and there's not much depth behind JGP and McGrath who will be turning 30 and 29 this year respectively.

So giving Finlay a chance could be a shrewd bit of business from Leinster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

Shanahan is out of contract end of season I think.

Hopefully Finlay gets a chance, be good to have some competition going forward with Doak.

Conor McKee in the academy also, but from what little I've seen Finlay looked sharper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,412 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

That was a pretty piss poor showing from your forwards. Lineout was taken apart by Munster. But the biggest issue was failing to give give your backs any sort of good platform. You played against 14 men for 70 minutes, but never exploited it because the forwards struggled.

Also, Billy Burns was poor. Kept kicking every time he got the ball despite your man advantage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,414 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

That's really tough to take tbh, a one man advantage for basically the whole game and Munster weren't showing much in attack, only to be done in by a missed tackle on Jack O'Donoghue of all players.

Bierne is a turnover machine but we made it easy for him, too slow to secure our own ball far too often.

Burns kicking in itself was fine, and pinning them back in those conditions isn't a bad plan if you can force a mistake from them, but we couldn't capitalise at all. My problem was that it was always his first choice option whenever they had Scannell and Farrell in centre, who aren't exactly defensive specialists, Zebo sent off, and Sean French defending the wide channels, and he looked a little headless out there on his first start. McIlroy, Lowry and Hume are good players to take advantage of that, but on out runners then kicking was drilled into us.

We lacked intensity and urgency the whole game, and got complacent after the red card imo. Our bench was a bit of a problem as well, couldn't impact the game or bring any stability but there's not much we can do about poor depth with so many people missing I suppose.

Again, really hard loss to take but roll on Northampton.

    Deflating game!

With our current injuries we could easily have the same outcome next week, we just seem clawless!

Thought our physicality in defence was good in first half. We just don't have any go forward, Vermuelen was gassed!

Was happy to see McGrath get 40 mins over him!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,150 ✭✭✭✭bilston

I just had a feeling we'd lose that from about the 25 or 30 minute mark.

    We're still too inconsistent.

We really missed McCloskey. Any idea when he is back?

A really poor game for the neutral to watch.

Doaks box kicking was really poor, he looks a super prospect but I think I counted 7 kicks that were completely uncontestable. Made Haley look imperious. Something to work on. Vermullen looked gassed by 50 and had little impact on the game which is to be expected as he settles in but the rest of the pack were also busted by 70 mins.
