I've been saying for years that the 2.30 closing time sets a target for people to bulk up on booze by, if they allowed opening until 4-6am staggered between pubs you would have much less people interacting with each other at closing time.

    Depends on what you drink.

Alcohol is to be priced based on ABV content of the drink. A can of entry level beer/cider and yellow pack wines and spirits will be affected as will crates and multiple packs, which generally carried discounted or were loss leaders or whatever. A can of Guinness/Heineken/Bulmers on it's own always cost over €2 but the 8 pack is €12-14 and a crate of 24 was circa €25. Now it's priced per can Doesn't take a dummy to work out what's going on here, once you get past the gubbermint conspiracy nonsense.

You won't see the €8 bottle of Bailey's knock off anymore either or the €4 table plonk vino or Painstripperski Vodka for a tenner. Your bottle of Powers or Smirnoff will still be €20-€22ish and no more weekend one day only price cuts.

Almost all craft/premium beers won't be affected; bottoms up for some of us at least ☺️

Some alcoholics are quite fussy about the quality of their drink. Alcoholism crosses all types of people from impoverished to extremely wealthy. It does mean a higher proportion of the spend goes on it, though, with the super wealthy buying tons of bottles of best champagne etc.

He’s right, money is not a barrier to somebody addicted. They will pay for booze by hell or high water, as with cigarettes or anything. And a person with a long-standing alcohol addiction will literally die without taking it unless medically supervised.

Nope it probably won't but they see it as next step and to look as though they are doing something. Awareness campaigns blasting 24/7 aren't doing much good either.

Only way it will happen would be a generational thing like the way smoking is (I think) less popular in schools than it was back in my day

Cheaper by a good €1 a pint than anywhere else I know in Dublin City Centre...

    Guinness €4.80

    Heineken €5.20

Dennis was a bit slow to pick up the point that was clearly being made. Getting a bit defensive there.

There was very little in the media leading up to it..same when alcohol was banned from club card points. I wonder was that "requested" by the government?

Price some groups out of buying alcohol in a shop and they will drink god knows what that was distilled in a shed somewhere. Cheap alcohol, no matter how dangerous it is, will always exist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,441 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Does he not realise the shops were selling alcohol below cost?

  • Posts: 24,207 ✭✭✭✭ Riley Helpless Grapevine

No the 'special fund' will become some crooked scheme that will be investigated down the line for fraud.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,204 ✭✭✭ShamNNspace

These things are happening organically anyway and nonsense like this achieves nothing apart from making those fundamentalists in that "charity" AAI which we are paying for btw all fluffy inside and filling the coffers of the retailers, the pubs will gain frig all though in their own naive and childlike heads they think they will
