Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI (2017) vs VW Passat 2.0 TDI (2016)

    Hi,

I was wondering if I could get some advice. Which car would you choose?

We are in the market for a bigger car as our family has recently got bigger. We currently have a VW Golf.

We essentially just want a car with bigger space especially in the boot.

We want to import a car from NI that has been registered in NI prior to 2021. I know that narrows down our choices but I've managed to find the following cars:-

    Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI CR SE L 5dr DSG automatic (May 2017) - £12,495

    Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI SE Business 4dr (2016) - £10,950

The specs on the cars say that the Octavia and Passat have a luggage capacity (seats up) of 590 and 582 litres respectively. Essentially the same. But when you look at the pictures the Octavia looks a lot bigger.

Other than that is there much difference between the 2 cars?

    Reasons for the VW

    1. Has cruise control
    2. Looks better
    3. Cheaper

    Reasons for the Octavia

    1. Automatic
    2. Looks like it has bigger boot space
    3. 1.6 engine (so less VRT). Really don't care about the BHP of a car as long as it can go uphill easily.

    Gavin

We got our 2nd Octy in 2015. We wanted another Octy because of the boot space you mentioned. It's brilliant. NOt sure how well it compares to a Passat or other cars but we've never found it wanting.

I test drove the 1.6TDi and found it sluggish and felt it underpowered compared to the 2005 1.9TDi we were coming from. Over the summer, we'd have a full boot, 4/5 occupants and a roofbox so I was worried if the 1.6 would cope with that. The dealer arranged a test drive in a 2.0TDi (same as in that Passat) and it was a world of difference. At the time I think it was €2,000 more for the 2.0 and it was the best two grand my wife ever spent :)

Also cruise control was a must for us. We do a lot of long distance motorway driving and it's a pain in the hole when we rent a car having to monitor the speed. Non cruise-controllers constantly leapfrogging on the motorway are the bane of my life.

The Passat is a more refined car than the Octavia, it's better insulated with less intrusive road noise. A 2016 Passat would also be a fresher model with newer tech and safety features which was only launched back in 2015 whereas the Octavia would have been launched back in 2013. The 2.0 TDi is also a much nicer engine than the 1.6 TDi.

I'm assuming the Passat would have independent rear suspension? The Octavia only has torsion beam and if the road is anyway twisty, it's like trying to steer your granny's sofa. The amount of body roll on ring road roundabouts is ridiculous.

Thanks guys for your responses. I've made an offer for the Passat.

From those choices, the Passat all day long. I have a 2.0 Octavia but would have bought a Passat if I could’ve got one in the right spec at the time.
