When I worked in the Central Library in the 90s Joe used to be a customer, but I never directly interacted with him. One thing I remember a staff member telling me in the staff kitchen “he’s extremely serious in real life, not the highly kind of comical persona he puts on during his broadcasts”.
One thing I recall distinctly is a morning I was going into work and had to pass him by in the ILAC during what was a Funny Friday type episode in Gaybo’s time, coming up to the Eurovision, the year Rock’n’Roll kids won. The song was being played over and over, or so it seemed, and Joe was addressing a then empty audience, and the producers were trying to drum up people to make a bit of noise and participate for when Gaybo would be handing over from the studio to the outside broadcast. He cut a lovely figure, talking to an empty space about 8.45 as I walked past and up the steps to my place of work, no time or much inclination to stop and linger.
