I found a few bags of what I assume is slack at the back of my uncle’s shed.

I’m looking for a convenient way of using this up. If I mixed it with sawdust and put the mixture into sturdy paper bags or cardboard boxes (maybe Nespresso tubes?) and put it at the back of the stove before lighting it, that should work?

I googled this but a lot of topics came back with stuff about keeping the stove going overnight. I’m not interested in that. We only have the stove going for three or four hours an evening.

    Ha. Slack.

We used to wet it really well and pile it onto a hot fire on a grate, patting it down to make a convex shape. The steam used to rise off it for about 30 mins, then it would start burning though, getting hotter and hotter, sometimes being hot enough to delaminate the grate.

If you're not looking for a long-running fire, then just fire a shovel-full onto the fire. It will all catch eventually.
