Should i dump this kettle

Normally you fill it, plug it in and push down the switch. a blue light comes on and it boils

Now the blue light goes off after two seconds and it does not boil

It's only a cheap 20 euro kettle. Is there anything i can do with it?

Are you in a hard water area? Could be a buildup of limescale on the heating element.

no i am not in hardwater area but i was reading about limescale. It said should be cleaned even in non hard water area though not as often. How do you clean the heating element?

You could soak it for a few hours in 50/50 water/white vinegar, rinse, refill and boil it a few times, it should do the trick

You can get kettle descalers in the supermarket. The aisle with dishwasher stuff usually have them. They are a small enough box so easy to miss.

Have you tried changing the fuse in the plug? I'd try that before throwing it out. Also, try a different socket - I've a vacuum cleaner that will not work on a specific socket, yet almost everything else will.

Finally, vinegar will work very well to remove limescale, but if it were that bad you'd probably see the deposits inside.

Your kettle sounds like it might have a loose wire somewhere, check the plug and cable connections at the element.

I personally never throw anything 'broken' out without firstly taking it apart and at least trying to fix it. A few months back I was looking to get a vacuum cleaner for my workshop, was in the local recycling centre and took home five vacuum cleaners in the hope that I might be able to get at least one of them working . . . All five were simple fixes so I kept the best one, gave one to a friend and returned the others for recycling.

Probably not in the op's case as light comes on for a bit, but it is utterly amazing how many people claim something is broken and the fix literally is either a fuse or in the case of vacuums, the filters never getting cleaned.
