The image/graph/gif/thing on that page is excess mortality in reference to 2016-2019. So they're averaged those years and then colour coded the excess mortality with a %increase on those years. The information you're looking for is there.

"Excess mortality is expressed as the percentage rate of additional deaths in a month, compared to a “baseline” in a period not yet affected by the pandemic. The baseline adopted consists of the average number of deaths that occurred in each of the 12 months during the period 2016-2019. The higher the value, the higher the amount of additional deaths compared to the baseline. "

Lads… I’m not a mod but this is the general rugby thread in the rugby forum! There is a whole forum dedicated to waffle about covid and the vaccine if you want to take it over there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,479 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Quite right too Cap'n. There's even an off topic thread here if they want.

But anyway, with all the covid talk I don't know if it's been mentioned that Jim Sherwin passed away yesterday. A great rugby correspondent and commentator for RTÉ, he was at his peak in the 1990s, in the post Fred Cogley era, and before that young whippersnapper Ryle Nugent came in the scene.

Jim was the voice of the game when I began to play and follow the sport and he used to present AIL coverage when it was huge in the last years of amateurism.

    May he rest in peace.

I am a mod and want to echo this sentiment.

I'll be reviewing the past few pages, but for now, drop any talk of vaccines.

Right so lets see the data from these years, I do find it abit odd that they only seem interested in showing data from the last 2 years.

Point made and noone seems to disagree so we can end the discussion here!

    Wellity wellity wellity.

Leicester Tigers being investigated for alleged salary cap breaches from 2016-2020. Which is very funny as that was the period when they were utter crap on the pitch. They were also one of Saracens biggest critics when they were being investigated for their salary cap breaches.

Aye, tis on the English rugby thread

Brendan Fanning has article calling for removing tackle from mini rugby up to age of 10. behind paywall.

dont think we should remove tackle completely before age of 10 but have at all age grades more organised tag, touch and smaller sided games be it 7s or 10s

It’s a tough one. If the tackling is taught correct then doing it from early is probably no issue. I coach the u7s and they are always asking when tackling starts. We use tackle bags with a gate with tape across it to teach them to get low and use the hands to wrap but for matches it’s touch with two hands which is good as it at least gets them into the right position for a tackle. Tag doesn’t give that and I’m not sure it would be a good stepping stone to contact for kids.

although we have some very small kids that may be put off by tackling come September

It's increasingly common to leave tackling out altogether at younger levels, I think NZ has no tackle til u14? No harm as, Like you say, 2 hand touch along with drills that teach technique in rucking and tackling suffice. A lot of kids want to tackle but they also just want to play. For training kids we add rules about no tucking the ball or two handed carries only, and turn over after 5 phases, turnover for any 45 degree running lines, etc. There's plenty to learn in rugby without tackling and Ive seen enough kids getting rocked over the years from knocks or their head hitting the ground in a tackle to value focusing on the other skills for youths.

No NZ does not ban tackling till u14. My nephew is 14 and he has been playing tackle rugby for at least 7 years.

There is probably science based data supporting some of the decisions around tackling in various jurisdictions which I'd generally defer to - particularly because I played very little rugby and have never coached it.

I coach two age groups of GAA however and tackling / blocking in both hurling and football is something I emphasise WAY more with my youngest childs group and it's because I feel that by 12/13 (my older childs group) the kids can develop a fear around more physical aspects of the game and despite understanding the technique simply don't have the will or desire to engage. When my older child started if I had the coaching experience I have now I'd have made it a much larger part of training and made it fun and non threatening so the kids built better habits around some of the less enamoured aspects of defensive play.

It's an interesting topic, but from a rugby perspective obviously much different given the risk for (in particular) head injury.

A kiwi friend of mine was actually giving out about the younger kids going to tag instead of two handed tip, he reckoned it was done because dickish parents were giving refs a hard time because the calling of touch can cause too much argument.

I tend to agree with Venjur leaving it too long might make introducing it tougher. At least I think that’s what he meant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,037 ✭✭✭ersatz

It is a fair point venjur makes but at the same time a lot of kids only come to rugby at 11 or 12 years old (some later) and the physical issue doesn't present a difficulty there. i and with younger kids that they develop at bizarrely different rates whether its physical stature, coordination, etc, and a focus on catching and passing and the rudimentary grammar of the game is the most important set of skills to lay down, tackling is relatively 'easy' in comparison.

I have heard that the young kids in NZ start with 2 hand tag. I don't live there so not sure what age that is up to. I do remember watching my nephew play u8 years and that was tackle.

I agree that tackling should be taught at a young age as it's one of the fundamentals along with passing and catching.

Kids in ireland start with 2 handed tag to the hips (leprechaun rugby u7s)

    waist tackling starts U8s

Most certainly. If taught correctly great but often technique isnt taught very well.... tag is good for defensive organisation but as intro to tackling not soo much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,654 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

No it’s often not taught right, we’ve had a couple of workshops with Leinster on teaching techniques but I suppose your relying on available parents to coach who have varying degrees of knowledge and some are not comfortable teaching something they never did.

No one ‘bans’ tackling for kids, people in different places try different things to limit underage exposure to head injuries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,200 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

You said that you thought NZ didn't have tackling till u14. I corrected you. Sorry for using the word "ban". 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,037 ✭✭✭ersatz

Properly phrased I asked whether its true that NZ don't tackle...the question mark is the tell there. In fact you corrected yourself in a subsequent post. Just coz we're being super precise here.

I see the scarlets have signed Vaea Fifita. Wasps apparently couldn't hold onto him.

With the recent reduction in the Salary Cap in England there will be quite a few "imports" looking for new clubs next season.

You can see it already with several recent departures announced as the clubs cut back their squads.

    Absolutely incredible story.

All the more astounding that the gutter press then doorstepped the Cipriani’s in relation to it and it has nothing to do with either of them.

Apparently the alleged player that this is against has a reputation of being a bit of a gowl, surprised me as I wouldn’t have thought that about him unless I missed loads of stuff.
