Is‘nt it a security breach that a truck that size could actually get to the airport?

What exactly would you do to stop one

There was an incident. A man driving a lorry became ill and lost control of the lorry. Some property was damaged but no one was killed or even injured thank God.It wasn’t really a newsworthy story at all.

If the Gardai have to issue a statement explaining in minute detail every single time there is an incident where one car hits another somewhere in Ireland then it would soon get very tedious for all concerned.

You wouldn’t even know this had happened at all if the media hadn’t decided to run with it. They ran with it because there is a certain section of Irish society becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of dramatic terrorist attacks in Ireland and they know that these people want these accidents to be deliberate.

The link I posted above from the Mirror quotes an eye witness who thought it was a terrorist attack at first.

When someone goes hypo, (hypoglaecemic), it affects the reasoning and thinking. It is quite probable the driver was out doing his business, took a hypo and then ended up with what we see. It is not a common driver ailment, and diabetics need to be medically cleared to drive. Diabetics are supposed to eat regularly and not skip meals. Also they are supposed to test their blood while driving every so many hours.

It truly is scary and as a diabetic, I am only to aware of this scenario.

He didn't have a Diabetic episode ( Hypo) and then drive all the way to the airport from where ever, and damage all those cars....after the Hypo, he became disoriented and its from that point onwards, the damage was caused. A matter of seconds, I've seen it happen sometimes the Diabetic can feel it coming on, and has time to react,,,,eat or drink something with lots of sugar in it, and make a very quick recovery. The vehicles he struck were haphazard....if he ( or anyone else) wanted to cause serious damage and injuries, in a 40 ' artic, he / she would be capable of literally wrecking that part of the airport.

Yes it is scary, but surprisingly enough, considering the Nr of diabetic drivers there are, accidents caused by hypos are very rare. So after a medical examination, they are readily licensed and insured. Management is all important, as you mentioned, Regular meals are essential, with special attention paid to the insulin injections, matching the amount of insulin injected to the food consumed. 1. Articulated trucks make hundreds of visits to the airport every day. How do you think cargo and aviation fuel get there?
2. I'm not sure what you mean by 'that size'? Articulated buses, which frequent the airport 24/7 are considerably longer than an articulated truck.

Toby, most Diabetics are so familiar with being a diabetic, that they can feel it coming on and react in time, the will always carry lucozade or other high sugar content sweets etc. they are the lucky ones. Others, like the driver in the Airport, not so lucky. Sometimes it can hit so fast that you wont have time to react. And some wake up in hospital, without having a clue on how they got there. There was ( and still is ) a drive to reduce sugar content across the board...in Lucozade, it was reduced by a large %, and diabetics got caught out with it...less sugar, less effective during a Hypo.

I'd say its more the opposite, there's lots of them on here who don't have a clue about either Diabetes, Hypo's or what kind of HGV's are driving in and out of Dublin Airport.

Would a diabetic person qualify to hold a HGV license ? Seems odd to me that…considering the possible array of symptoms and effects of the disease.
