How long does immunity last after having, I assume only a few months

    Eh...vaccines? And regular boosters.

Similar to flu vaccines and pneumococcal vaccines which are generally taken by 50+ folks and health care workers.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

How on earth is saying that we have to go back to normal a silly comment? If we aren’t going back to normal this January when the f*ck will we?? We have a milder variant and ALL OF the vulnerable are triple vaccinated and freshly boosted

Obviously precautions can stay in healthcare settings, like there always have been.

Protect nursing homes, antigen tests, masks etc. Same with hospitals

Provide free flu and covid vaccines twice a year.

Provide antivirals for when symptoms appear or when admitted to hospitals

Recommend mask wearing for elderly and vulnerable. Keyword is recommend.

Education and support, not scaring the daylight out of old people

    Probably other things I’m forgetting

Let the rest of us get on with life. This is nothing more than the sniffles for 99% of us. Honestly a load of bollox at this stage and no justification for any restrictions after January

Do you mean after having covid.

I know lots of young people who caught covid in the summer, most have had positive antigen tests this week, not sure if they bothered going for pcr tests.

The result of Martins decision to shut construction down for four months was the loss of skilled labour to other more rational countries so due to scarcity of tradespeople higher prices for us all.

It will result in Sinn Fein being a large part of the next government because the young people want to kick Martin snd Varadkar where it hurts because of the housing issue, Sinn Fein in Government wont be good for this country.

If we are getting upto 15k ‘official’ cases a day (and double/triple that etc for real numbers), how are the current precautions actually working?

If, at this stage, people are still running from Covid in a desperate hope to never ever catch it, they’re fighting a futile losing battle. And they are free to take their own precautions in this, society doesn’t owe everyone. The vulnerable have been triply vaxxed for the most part, they’ve been protected from the original strain and 2 variants, there is no precautions stopping this one - as South Africa have started to realise.

I don't see how the rampant spread of colds and sore throats heretofore in any way supports the suggestion that you can trust people not to pass illnesses along willy-nilly, so I'll assume you're trying to make the point that if Omicron is mild people don't need to be trusted. And if Omicron does turn out to be significantly milder than previous variants, I'd agree that we don't need to rely much on Joe Public's adherence to public health advice, so fingers crossed! But I'll feel much more comfortable if that call is made by professionals - or at least semi-professionals.... - on the back of significant data - rather than people at low risk, who aren't concerned about passing it along, baying to rally behind the earliest preprint that supports their cause. And yes, I do think the majority of the public can be trusted, but there are always those happy to come to work/the pub/dinner with flus and colds - firm believers in the "A trouble shared is a trouble halved" adage...

Between variants?. Maybe a few weeks. I've tested positive on antigen. Wife developed same symptoms as me and has now also tested positive on antigen after some negatives. Both awaiting PCR results. Hers might come back positive anyways as she only finished isolating after having it right as omicron popped up. I'm fairly certain mine will come back positive and would be quite the cocidence for her to have a separate virus with the same symptoms.

Just catching up on the case numbers for today, god that's a serious situation, glad now we decided to more or less isolate ourselves from family and friends for the festive season, good desition on our part it would seem

The figures today prove we need to have the army out on the streets.

That's a bit extreme, surely Tony and co would go quieter than that.

What I said last night this time last night, seeing the case numbers today it seems to have borne fruit, anyway talking to extended family all over different parts of the country today, the number of them isolating or having tested positive seems to have gone beyond the beyond, all I'll say is myself and OH are just glad we made the decision to isolate this xmas.

Not sure boosters will provide much protection to those that are already vulnerable unfortunately, as someone in an earlier post said I think we're in for a long January.

    Not sure about what?

One of the reasons why boosters are so important is to protect those that are vulnerable.

Mr Nolans projections was based on the behavior the delta variant only and even now with a more transmissible variant (Omicron) it remains to be seen how that transfers in hospitalisations in the weeks ahead.

It's a normal weekend jump than a big jump. Weekends and Bank holidays has little or no discharges.

A big drop from a month ago (November 25th) 556 in hospital and 126 in ICU.

Good points. For all the talk of Omicron being supposedly "mild", you wouldn't knowingly turn up at a Christmas dinner with a cold or flu on you, never mind the Omicron variant itself, as you would know there is a strong chance you would pass it on to your relatives or friends and make them sick. So all of the talk today of people isolating and giving Christmas a miss this year seems eminently sensible.

The mind boggles on this one - personal responsibility is the way out of it, but pubs can't be closed at 8pm because those who are to be relied upon to show personal responsibility will move on to house parties. You couldn't make that up. Is it any wonder we're in the state we're in?

Do they not have rounds of vaccines available to them?

Stayed up till midnight to book a PCR . At 00:05 suddenly hundreds became available in Dublin . I started to book one slot for Monday intending to book another for my husband . I got stuck waiting for the code so had to wait . Got the code at 00:18 . Quickly booked mine and went to book his and not a single slot left in Dublin by 00:20

It wont. Nphet are goosed and they know it. By saying we wont see the impact on hospitals for 2-3 weeks they are just buying time.

I see the doctor is now telling us to avoid meeting anyone indoors, and to avoid sales and busy shops.

Anything he’d like us to do? How long are we supposed to listen to being told to live like hermits? It’s great if you’re a financially secure family with 2.5 kids and working from home. Otherwise, no chance.

I left this thread yesterday to avoid the doom and gloom. Never thought there would be 7/8 odd pages worth of stuff!!

If you have 2.5 kids you are exposed by sending them to school, activities, trying to give them a life, and the rest.Probably practical if you're a financially secure couple working from home (most single people -though not all- probably miss the company of socialising), and that's it.Although realistically, it is just plain crap for everyone.

Is the biggest threat to the health system the requirement for Health care workers to isolate for ten days (even if the infection and transmissibility has passed)?

This is me 2 nights running, up at midnight.Need 5 tests.Loads of slots available at midnight.HSE texts with validation codes never came through and I lost all of them.I got ONE appointment after about 6 attempts, for this evening.Got annoyed, and managed to find private appointments for tomorrow. Those bookings were made midnight on Christmas eve.The positive antigen was Friday morning and it has taken me this long.

Typical Ireland, get around the problem with the public system by having to pay for private.
