I think people are hearing in the media how cars are in short supply, holding value and even appreciating. They then think that their car is worth more than it is.

both the coupe in Tipperary and Kerry from authorised dealers that are cheaper are still for sale so very unlikely that car will sell at that money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,593 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Some of these used car prices seem to be fueled from within. Dealers like Quinn the other day looking for silly money for their cars, which in turn sees smaller dealers and private sellers want silly money for their cars. It's a self induced vicious circle.

I think the sensible thing to do is just wait out this craziness, it's just not sustainable.

Seller states its one of a kind with real carbon fibre bodykit, and has BMW warranty

Not sure that makes it worth what he is asking though?

Joe Achilles drive of the i4 M50. Not surprisingly, for a petrol head, he's not that impressed overall. Very quick but a one trick pony. Its big problem, according to Joe, is it's weight...heavier than an X5 by a good 200kg! Range also nowhere near the claimed figure and he reckons the i4 40 to be the better buy.

The i4 M50 is probably very impressive but is nothing like a M4 rival. It’s not a proper M car and like most electric cars is 500kg too heavy to be anything like a fun drivers car.

While its not really a surprising review from Joe Achilles, he still makes some valid points. It's a strange situation, the die hard EV disciples are complaining about the presence of a transmission tunnel and the fact it's not an EV designe from the ground up while many petrol heads just don't share the love either due to the lack of true driver involvement, fun and heavy weight once you get used to the EV torque. It really makes you wonder where cars like this will fit in given the i4 M50 is supposed to be aimed at enthusiasts (both EV and petrol heads) who don't just want an a to b commuter vehicle.

I’m not at all surprised at that joe Achilles review.

he doesn’t like electric vehicles and he didn’t like the 4 series gran coupe in the M440i version either. Put them together and it was always going to be negative.

the space in the back seat is always going to be an issue due to the gran coupe body shape. All depends on how much you need room in the back seat as to whether the car is suitable for your needs.

his criticism about weight and handling are valid I suppose but I’ll bet it grips and handles better than 99.9% of cars on the road but not as well as his M3. As a daily driver with a turn of pace I’m guessing it’s a lovely drive.

it has to be remembered also that as a financial proposition in Ireland more so even than the uk where performance cars, while expensive have not been completely killed by taxation,The ev offering is vastly cheaper to buy and run and will likely have better residuals than combustion equivalent. These things matter just as much as ultimate handling balance, feel etc. In the real world.

I do think Joe talks a lot of sense though about the i4 40 being a better choice. Cheaper, better range and lighter...so better to drive. The m50 version is really only about bragging rights for that 0-60.

Another reviewer who thinks the same.

That being said, I'd have one of these any day of the week over a bloody Tesla.

I would agree but in Ireland when you spec up the base model with some of the kit that is standard on the m50 model, you are only a few grand below the price of the more expensive model which would push you towards it.

I see Beshoffs sold the m340i already.

it certainly didn’t hang around long.

I watched mat watsons review of the new gran coupe version and he wasn’t recommending it, just consider it he said. I am still not sure it’s any better looking than the last model.

I think its a bit pointless really compared to the 3 series saloon or touring. The coupe has its place of course but I don't think the GC will sell very well at all.

I had arranged to view it last Saturday morning but they called me on Friday evening to let me know it was gone!!

Probably just as well, I had a figure in my head and if they were close to trade up to it I was more than likely go for it!

They normally do don't they ? Audi sold shedloads of the a5 sport back and the old 4 series gc was pretty common.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Yes but the previous 4 gc was much more stylish and desirable compared to the 3. Not so now with the latest generation 3 and 4.

The new 4 series GC is not the best in the metal. Not only is the grill awful the styling is just a bit too awkward for a coupe.

Its getting a lot harder to be a BMW fanboy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,814 ✭✭✭carsfan2

The old 4 gran coupe accounted for more than half of all 4 series apparently.

I see a grey one in the local BMW showroom window so I will pop in and have a look at some stage. Apparently it’s actually taller than a 3 series which is a bit strange for a coupe

You must be itching to change that 530e!

are you still getting the i4?

some of the uk reviews have been disappointing I think.

The problem with the new 4 Series GC is your paying alot more but getting less now. The boot is more practical than the 3 Series saloon due to being a fastback but you pay for it with the rear space. The original 4 GC really was an afterthought to rival the A5 Sportback and really had 2 rear doors shoehorned onto it but in reality rear space is no better than the 2 door coupe with the rear doors being small with a narrow opening. I'm surprised that this wasn't addressed better in the second generation though. The 4 Series really isn't a family car though, it's ok for an occasional rear passenger or two who are not in anyway tall but the boot space way more practical than the 5 Series saloon I had before mine.

I’m not to be honest, but if the right car came up I’d consider it. I think that m340i was pretty good value at €68k, considering it would cost about €103k to buy new today!

I really like the 530e actually, amazing spec, super comfy. I’ll try hold onto it until the i4 comes.

The i4 reviews are a bit mixed alright, I think more is expected from a car with an M badge on it, when it’s really more along the lines of the M440i compared to the M4. If they were to compare them to side by side it would be interesting to see what people went with.

I’m not going to cancel my order anyway, looking forward to getting a test drive in one

I purchased the m550i wheels from Joe's mate and I have to say, the photos don't do them justice at all. They really are a lovely alloy! I always found the original m sport rims very conservative. Michelin PS4s tyres to boot!

Thanks again Joe for helping me out, Kevin was an absolute gent to deal with!

Nice one Wallin, I met Kev earlier today and he showed me one of those pics you’d sent him. They look excellent!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,593 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

They look the business Mr Wailin and look practically brand new. They really suit the G30 and the Brembo brake calipers can actually be seen now.

Are those PS4s run flats or standard? If standard how do you find them compared to the old run flats?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

They're standard bazz, and I was pretty amazed at the difference compared to the pilot sport 3 runflats on the original alloys. They soak up bumps way better and the car feels different....hard to explain! It feels sharper when turning, surprising really. Those alloys are also nearly 2kg lighter per wheel.

I'll need to pick up some tyre sealant as a back up, already have a small compressor in case of a puncture.

They look class Wailin! I'm friends with Kevin as well and had one of these in my car (grey Golf R) yesterday on the way to Belvedere. I think I just met you briefly there was a lot going on!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,832 ✭✭✭maddness

Lovely, one of the nicest wheels BMW currently make.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,814 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Beautiful wheels Wailin and a lovely upgrade to a great car.

It has turned out to be an appreciating asset! Strange times.

Anybody any plans to make any changes in 2022?

Did you sell your Fiesta @Vintage VRS?

I had plans to change but probably won't now unless prices take a tumble. Fancy a hot hatch like a 128ti or similar before we are forced over to electric but everything now is just silly money. There is such poor value out there in the car market at present that even if you managed to get more for your current car than you paid for it, your still going to be paying over the odds for the car that replaces it.
