I think they could start with unit pricing - 24 cans for €24 then one can is €1, not €3.50. So there would be no pressure to buy more than you want.

I saw three young lads - about 14 years old I would guess - staggering away from Tescos a few weeks ago each weighed down with 24 can slabs of beer, obviously on their way to a party. Now if they could buy them in unit quantities, then a six pack was all they would have bought each for their own consumption.

It is the old 'Buy One, Get one Free' that causes so much over buying and consequent waste.

Surprised it's Tesco as they are **** about getting ID off people unless they got someone else to buy it for them.

Just been to Lidl and picked up 2 slabs of Guinness and a bottle of their London dry gin for just over €40. These are the best days of our lives lads, it's a shame they won't last much longer.

None of the captain Cook left in my local shop so ill check again tomorrow, could do with stocking up a few bottles of that.

Well, it was just round the corner from Tescos, but they could have got it elsewhere because it is also not far from the Dart.

It was three lads - one looked small enough to be in short pants, but the other two could pass for a bit older, but not the advertised 25. They were clearly going to a party, and if they were of the same age, it would be when some boys shoot up but other do not for a few years, hence my guess at 14 years. At that age, boys are between 6 foot plus and 4 foot, but the 4 foot ones will add more quite suddenly in the next wee while.

I guess they either were not checked or they got an adult to buy it for them.

Anyone get the Heineken bottles for 12 in Tesco? Tried 4 Tesco’s, even different counties and nothing. 26.99 scanned (weird price for 20 bottles) and staff knew nothing of the €12 price and wouldn’t honour it.

Sorry , but this argument makes no sense at all ! ...... You are saying that they would have only bought a six pack if the unit price was the same across the board - i.e €1 a can.......if they didn't want to buy 3 cases they could have just bought one case between them - 8 cans each for €1 a go ! ...... that been said, I think MUP is a disaster and fair play to them (hoping they're over 18) for stocking up ‼️😁

Called in to get them as checked the specific website for that shop which said they were 12. Said 27 when I got there. Chap said he didn't know , asked him to ask the manager he came back 10 mins later to say that offer doesn't apply to this shop even though they were advertised as 12 online. Left shop like a dog . Tried to order them on click and collect and no joy either

15 quid for jameson? Has it ever been lower? How much will it be once MUP kicks in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,177 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

Whiskeys that size will have a minimum price of around €22 so not as badly affected as beer but like with beer certain brands like Jameson may want to maintain a premium differential over minimum price so I'd expect cheapest we will see next year €25-€30

    You are missing my point.

They were (I assume) going to a party. If the cans were sold each (at whatever price) there would be no 24 can slabs, so how many would they bring each? With no pre-selected number of cans, would it be a six pack each, or a random number? Because the price of a 24 can slab is say €24, and a single can is €3.50, then it makes sense that each buys the 24 slab, since a six pack is nearly the same price. That is why the supermarkets do this - to get you to buy more because the unit price is so much lower. You are in the store and will buy much more of other stuff.

Do you think a 14 year old boy could drink 24 cans over an evening? Would they be able to stand? Would they be puking into the porcelain before the night was out? They were presumable invited to a party and were expected to bring their own drink, and peer pressure determined that a slab was the amount each was to bring - for the reasons explained above. No 14 year wants to be branded a cheap skate, or unable to down loads of cheap beer.

A bottle if wine is the unit an adult would bring to a party because that is how they are sold. If you want to show off, then you get a more expensive bottle, not a case of cheap wine on special offer.

I would prefer 'unit pricing' rather than 'minimum unit pricing'. The latter just gives the seller the opportunity for greater profits as the normal competition is removed.

No offence, but there is more assumptions than cans of beer in your theory!
