Clamping - does moving your car in a car park "reset" the allowable time if you go to a new bay

Hi

Was clamped recently in a car park, it has a 2 hour free parking allowed. I was there for an hour, went to leave, ended up staying to meet a friend so parked in another part of the car park and when I came back 90 mins later had been clamped. Two and half hours there but in different spots for the time.

Does moving from one area to another reset the timer by any chance?

Debating on if I can appeal this or not.

Wouldn't think you have a leg to stand on, you are not purchasing or reserving a space, the deal is for free 2 hours of parking, not free 2 hours at a certain space. I'd pay the clamping fee and move on.

Most car parks stipulate that moving your car around the car park does not extend the parking period over the allowance. Just pay the fine and be done with it.

If you have 2 hours free parking in a car park, why would you thing you can stay for more than that just by changing the position of your car in it?

If you'd left the car park and returned then you could try and argue that you where back for another 2 hours, all you did was change spaces so you where still parking on their site for more than 2 hours. But the precedent would most likely be that with paid street parking, in Dublin city at least, you can't return to the same street within 1 hour, so leaving a space doesn't reset the clock.

Reason for asking, adamant in law that is trying to "help" and is melting my head.

I kinda suspected that his logic was "shakey" but wanted a second opinion. Fine is paid btw. Just thinking out loud.

Is clamping common in car parks?

The only way I could see that happening would be in an otherwise no charge local authority car park.

It's usually only done in car parks close to good public transport links. Though I've seen security taking note of cars in shopping centre car parks that aren't near public transport, their rules follow them or park else where.

I was clamped in the UCD car park a few years ago. I had a permit that was linked to my licence plate.........car in garage..........got replacement car for the day.........didn't update licence plate on UCD parking permit system........and got clamped. The biggest pain in the hole was waiting nearly 2 hours for the clampers to come back and unclamp my car.

my local shopping center has somebody going around taking down the reg numbers of all cars parked there. they do this to prevent all day parking
