Very wild in my part of Cork City at the moment (North East). Worse than we've had all day. Most of the day was blustery but nothing major. Seems only in that last few hours its gotten bad

Stronger gusts coming at times in East Galway, can feel the upstairs floor shaking ever so slightly, the Joy's of a building boom timber frame house. Kids won't go to sleep either with the racket.

Agreed, some serious gusts about 15 mins ago and still fairly strong.

The Swift is in dock at Liverpool, has been for several months, it doesn't sail outside of peak summer season, partly because they end up cancelling a significant number of crossings during the winter months.

The Epsilon is half the size of the Stena ships and the Ulysses, and as a result, in weather like we've seen this week, it is NOT a nice ship to travel on. A number of years ago, they had a severe incident during a crossing from Cherbourg to Dublin, which resulted in significant damage to the ship and a number of vehicles, and that was while they were sheltering in Barnstaple Bay to stay out of the worst of a storm. They've spent the last 24 hours sailing up and down off Drogheda as there's nowhere in Dublin to moor it, and Holyhead is even worse. I have no inside information to confirm this, but going by the speeds they have been doing in recent days, I am wondering if there has been some sort of engine issue, so reduced power, they tried twice to get into Holyhead in the last few days, and failed, despite there being 2 tugs available to assist, and some of the recent crossings have been at very reduced speeds compared to what they normally operate at.

The Irish sea can be a very hostile piece of water with some wind directions, the larger ships now in use have made crossings in poor weather more tolerable, but the smaller ships do not cope well with the combinations of wind and waves that are too often the normal between Dublin and Holyhead, and the crossings to and from Rosslare can be even more challenging, but that also is partly a factor of smaller ships being used on that route.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Lights flickering now in Newport, hopefully the power doesn't go as I'm relying on headphones and YouTube.

Yes, Gerry said its because of Dublin's population. And the winds will be stronger than earlier today.

So no chance of Meath, Kildare, Wicklow also being upgraded then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,289 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

There is no reason for Dublin's schools to be closed tomorrow, the upgrade to Orange Level Warning for that County expires at 7am.

Unless school premises have been damaged in some way, or remain without power, they should open as normal.

Heavy shower of hail here in South Tipp. Wind picked up a bit after 7pm and some strong gusts still around.

That incident travelling from France has sustained 60knot winds and gusts of 105 knots/ 200km/hr according to wiki, now that’s red weather , it’s not a boat I would like to be going to France on.

    done that trip many times.

one year on the Pont Aven we got in to cork a few hours early so sat in the harbour until offload time.

Reason being the captain was making time to avoid the worst of a storm that year, can’t remember the year , I think around 2013 possibly , I remeber some serious jumps on that crossing that spooked me and I love travelling by boat.

No reason to suggest it should, the storm will be in its final phases over Ireland as it continues to fill and move away east.

Quite enough school days have been lost the last 20 months without blithely calling off another unnecessarily, especially as Christmas exams and such are due shortly.

Power gone this hour now and will be for the duration. Luckily the power bank was charged and the phones are all working. Have to let the fire die down as no Esb to power the circulation pump. 🙄 Could be worse, no damage yet even tho the gusts are pretty severe.

And yet in kerry, trees are down everywhere, buildings are damaged, roads are flooded and power will be out for at least 36 hours for many. Many haven't even got water to make a hot drink on a gas stove if they have gas.

It's the usual rubbish, I'm fine therefore it didn't happen. 🤣

If there's no need to extend it then fair enough. I agree that enough school has been lost out on, but if it isn't safe, it isn't safe.

The eye seems to be sitting on top of N Ireland.

Easing here in Galway West. I dont expect the 10pm gusts to be as high as the 9pm gusts. The period 8pm-9pm was wild.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?
