Sewer drain vent issue, advice needed

Hi all, I have a problem, my front garden has a sewer drain vent (very old house) and unfortunately a gardener was doing work and for some reason broke the top off the vent and covered over the hole in soil while he was planting a new tree. I didn’t realise he had done this until today as i smelt a sewerage smell in the front garden. I had a lot of issues last year with drains blocking in the house and I remember dyno rod put something down this shaft possibly a camera to help resolve the issue which they did

I started digging today to find the drain vent hole and I can’t find it, will dig again in morning, my understanding is that there is quite a drop under my garden before you hit the sewer pipe. Any advice on what I can do here, I am raging but just want to get it fixed as the sewer smell is concerning and my guess is all the soil has choked up the pipe!

Anything on this folks, I’ve dug up a fair sized hole in the garden but cannot locate the pipe! the sewage smell has subsided thankfully however I’m concerned this will cause me issues down the line, from reading further it appears the vent was a fresh air inlet sewer vent. So basically that vent is now buried in soil and the top of it was smashed. I’m 50/50 on leaving it as is or my only alternative is to get a machine in to dig a serious hole to find the vent pipe! What would people suggest

Maybe probing with a metal rod (provided that the vent pipe is not completely filled with soil)?
