Beginner Mirror Project - Advice Needed !!

Afternoon all.

I'm undertaking a mini challenge to make a large-ish "city mirror" I think they're called. Basically 30cm mirror squares...separated by 1cm battens. Thinking of 4x5 size-wise. I have two questions:

What backing would be appropriate ?. I'm thinking something rigid enough so doesn't bend, thick enough to take mountings...but no heavier/thicker than needed
I believe there's a proper adhesive I should use...that won't eat into the mirror backing

It's only for a bedroom so I'm determined to take a run at it. Any advice appreciated.

I think I might have a solution for your large-ish wall mirror. Here it is:

There is an interwoven pattern on Category II Safety Backing in the back. The front safety backing (Category I) has a smooth finish. However, Mirror Mastic will adhere to Category II Safety Backing, but not to Category I Safety Backing.
