So, Rassie Erasmus found guilty on six counts:

    9eacws2ay6081.jpg

Murray K: Rassie Erasmus has been suspended from all rugby activities for two months. He's also suspended from all match-day activities until 30 September, 2022. He has also been warned as to his future conduct and will have to apologise to the relevant match officials.

Match-day activities include coaching, contact with match officials, and media engagement. SA Rugby has been fined £20,000. Also given warning as to future conduct and will need to offer an apology to the relevant match officials.

A snippet from a mail from Erasmus to Nic Berry, also from Murray K:

Point 1 is a bit more serious than merely releasing it off the bat.

Pretty heavy sanctions, good. Will hopefully stop other coaches from acting the dick in future.

I think Erasmus has got off lightly.

    What an absolute prick.

Agree on the second part but those kind of sanctions against a coach are unprecedented. What else would you have asked for?

  • ✭✭✭✭

A longer ban? No rugby activity until Sept or further, never mind no match-day activities.

I do like the fact he must apologise, purely because it'll completely sicken him.

There was no chance of an outright ban for a year. Even these sanctions are unusual in their duration. Has any other coach ever been sanctioned this severely? It would stand up to appeal to ban him outright for a year from all rugby activity.

  • ✭✭✭✭

Dean Richards got 3 years outright so yes coaches have been sanctioned far more severely.

But even if they hadn't, so what?

Yeah, he's learned his lesson alright. I'd say any apology will be 100% sincere.

Rassie Erasmus on Twitter: "Only in 🇿🇦 😉 https://t.co/nuirp4HVr2" / Twitter

He was a snake when he was at Munster, and he's only got worse since then, but now I'm beginning to think the guy has some sort of disorder.

Whether serious or not, its basically him saying he will try and work his way around the ban. One can only hope it comes up in his appeal.

Of course he will. He's already flaunting the rules of the game every time SA play with his 'water carrier' antics.

All that will happen is he'll get a ticket for the game, sit in the stands as a 'fan' and spend the entire game on his phone to Nienaber.

World Rugby brought this upon themselves by turning a blind eye to his behaviour for too long.

The guy is out of control and no-one in SARU seems willing or able to bring him to heel. Quite the opposite in fact, they enable him at every chance they get and as long as the Boks keep winning, I suppose they'll continue to do so.

A persecution complex seems to be developing amongst South African rugby journalists. Or maybe it's always been there and I'm just noticing it now they're involved in the URC. Noticed another SA journalist complaining a while ago about tackles by Irish players going uncarded where if it were a SA player who made it, he's be sent off. Think it was after Leinster v the Bulls.

World Rugby have rightly come down hard on him which is good to see, but why exactly was he a snake when he was at Munster??

Is he a legit journalist or just a twitter head? Some serious persecution complex stuff going on there, to go with the gross generalisations. When you start sentences like "Every pundit outside SA had a go at them...", you've lost any good will, imo.

He's an actual journalist. Not the only one who has gone down this route either unfortunately.

As much of a dick Rassie is, this not comparable to what Richards did.

It's every bit as bad or worse. What he did, and continues to do, was/is appalling.

Fair enough if you think so. Being an arsehole and a coward criticizing refs. Is in now way as bad as deliberately cheating and conspiring to win a game fraudulently in my opinion.

It’s worse than that though. He didn’t just criticise a ref. He targeted him both professionally and personally and set a precedence allowing others do the same even more so than they already had. The impact that would have had on the guy is pretty horrendous. And he’s in no way remorseful. He doesn’t care what damage he does to anyone’s professional or personal lives. There’s a real maliciousness to this and no sign that he isn’t more than happy to do something like that again.

Berry's statement on the impact Erasmus' actions had on him. Horrendous is right.

I would absolutely call this worse than Bloodgate.

    "Critizing refs"

Have you read anything on this ban at all bar it's length? Doesn't look like it.

I always thought Nic Berry is a good ref. He obviously makes mistakes but his communication is excellent which is one of the most important parts.

He has come out of this looking very good. The statement above is excellent from him. But his statement is true in that he will only come out of this looking good for those that follow the story to the end. Even calling him Mr Erasmus throughout maintaining his professionalism while being attacked.
