50 posts before new users can do the basic thing of posting a link!

I've been told it takes 50 posts before new users can post links, this is really discouraging.

Its almost an interminable hurdle because when I go to post, I often want to post a link, but if I can't post a link then I don't bother posting, because I can't back up what I'm saying with the details of the linked article. I thought posting links to back up what you are saying was to be encouraged on forums not blocked!

Its an attempt to reduce spammers. It doesn't usually work currently anyway though.

General reason behind this is to stop new users joining just to spam content or post invalid links. Just build up you post count with genuine replies & it won't be an issue. We all had to do it & I understand where your coming from.

Don't think this rule will change as it's there for a reason.

The limit is 5 posts and an account older than 24 hours, unless it's been changed without telling us.

And as mentioned above, it's there for valid reasons learned over nearly a quarter century of the sites lifetime.

to discourage genuine users? is that the reason, Im not a spammer so I don't know why it applies to me, why is spamming being made my problem?

As I said I went to make a genuine reply to a post but then couldn't add in the link to the article which would back up what I said so I abandoned the genuine reply, because the basic functionality of the internet, links, has been blocked for users.

no its 50, I've been told by email. See even you don't believe it. It just discourage new users, makes their posts less useful...

Add your comment & just note you can't add a link in it just yet. People understand & it's all part of being on boards. Not ideal but that's how it is. Just because your not a spammer doesn't mean the next nerw user isnt. Admin here makes these rules as owners of the site, not you or I.

Like I advised, build up your posts & this won't be an issue for you.

The point of being on boards is that its on the internet and uses a thing called hypertext. ie links.

The office have confirmed it, it's 5 posts to be able to post a link, and 50 to have a signature.

And I do apologise @pjcb for giving you the wrong info - you need 50 posts to be able to add a signature and I confused the two limits when replying to you, sorry about that. Our limit for posting links used to be 50 posts and we reduced it a while back to 5.

An update to this, I have updated the limits so that any poster with 5+ posts can now post links.
