Why are libraries closed on the Saturday preceding a bank holiday?

Like at University of Limerick. Must be a state run thing.

Yes, just googled it and it appears public libraries close on Saturdays of bank holiday weekends; opportunity for a break from normal saturday openings.

That seems odd. The civil service don't get two days off. Why should librarians?

So that employees, many of whom are on Tuesday to Saturday contracts can avail of the public holiday.

Probably cheaper for local authorities to do it this way. Like most things, it comes down to money...

Library staff (in Dublin anyway) are rostered to work either Friday or Saturday on alternative weeks.

On bank holiday weekends, all staff work on Friday and the library closes on Saturday.

If the library opened on BH Saturdays, it might not be an even split between staff, depending on when the BH weekends fall (some staff might end up rostered for more BH Saturdays than others).

It's been like that for years.

Other council libraries don't open on Mondays, do the staff get the prior Saturday in lieu on BH weekends.

The staff don't get 2 days off, they get BH Monday. Those rostered to work Saturday work Friday instead.

I see. So there are much more staff working in a branch on that Friday. But meanwhile the public don't have service on the Saturday. Seems crazy.
