How come the night rates on a smart meter are so piss-poor? Just looking to gouge a few quid?

Don't get us started on that, we have a thread dedicated to bitching about it 😂

Would be very little difference or even higher in current market.

Wholesale rates are over €160/megawatt hour (16c kwh) add in pass through costs and a say a 2c margin for the operator and you are at 28c + vat per unit.

UK went over £150 on average and some intraday rates are in the thousands (where you need a lot more than you forecast for immediate use)

Its the same all over Europe, Spain is not far off €200 and germany is about €130.

But it will all calm down and prices will drop eventually - hopefully in the next few months

It's a pain in the arse for me because it's locked in our apartment block meter room and the c*nts in the management company won't let you read it yourself.

The answer to peak shifting is that you'll see a push to domestic level storage solutions, to push consumption to off peak/load balancing. A 10kwh battery would be plenty of balancing for the average home.

When the tech becomes more affordable I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a requirement for new connections.

Eirtricity say night rate is 11pm in Winter and midnight in Summer. But can't find an answer as to where spring/autumn lie.

The meter doesn't change. The difference is due to Daylight Savings Time. Will move to 11pm to 8am from next weekend.
