Just on the bookmark, if you leave a comment the thread is automatically bookmarked now.

Earlier in the changes it wasn't and you had to hit the bookmark tab.

Hi Helical, you need to verify your email address and you will be able to post in threads then. If you are not receiving the email for any reason, pleasde let me know on hello@boards.ie with an email from that email address. If it is a throwaway email address, you will need to use a real one that you have access to to set up the account.

Every time you post in a thread the 'Bookmark this discussion' is automatically selected so any threads you post in will appear in your Bookmarks list.

Handsup, we haven't had very many big updates recently and that is frustrating fgor users and for ourselves as well. We'll be having an update post from Odhran or myself soon, hopefully later in the week with where things stand and what we're working on.

If Odhran posts, I hope he doesn't bury it in the middle of a random thread like he usually does. I'm shocked that somebody at his level would do something like that. It is a very bad look

I've seen some of what you're saying. There's frustration from users and understandably so. The future of the site is at stake here though and there are a lot of users on here who work in IT who can see the rollout of this new boards has gone terribly and can see own goals being scored all over the place.

I have no idea about numbers etc., it doesn't affect my posting at all. People seem to be calling for statements, figures, breakdowns, etc. Why? How does it affect their discussions? If you want to talk about something, post about it, if you get no replies, so be it.

As for your problems, they sound like a right ballache, I get a bell notification that says someone mentioned my name, otherwise I just click into the threads I like to chat in, or that the title interests me. I know everyone has navigated different ways but my posting / browsing has honestly remained the same. The only changes for me have been visual.

I don't doubt your experiences at all, but the over the top reactions on many, many (many) threads seem bizarre.

Can definitely see that, there's one poster doing an enhancement suite to help, for free, off his own back. Fair play to him, and to the many who have offered same.

That's a case of frustration leading to help. Pretty good situation.

But when frustration leads to calls for sackings, reports, general slagging off, abuse, it seems counter productive.

For people who enjoy a community so much, some posters seem more interested in tearing it down.

I'll bow down to people with more IT knowledge (I can barely use a mouse) but the reaction should be commensurate to the loss.

I think people are hoping a fall in numbers will prompt action.

Then some people can't act normally on the internet.

In fairness, the site had threads before about how busy it was, the increase in numbers etc. I was curious about the decline in terms of numbers, I find it more significant than updates that the font in the ice skating forum is now more legible. That to me is a bit like rearranging the deckchairs when I suspect many want to know are we on the Titanic.

A decline in the frequency of posts would be more telling than the number of users.

Seems like a lot of previously busy forums have gone dead. The loss of one or two prolific posters can kill a thread.

Is a thread now automatically bookmarked for the OP or does the OP still have to explicitly follow their own thread after making the first post?

@Esel no the OP has to remember to follow their own thread for the moment. It's a silly way to have the feature working and I have asked that it be updated or replaced with inclusion of the OP auto following their own threads. I've no idea if or when that will be added though.

HI Niamh, is speed of the site been worked on? I find it incredibly slow in comparison to old site. But in reality any modern site should page load in less than 1 second. Site speed test here https://tools.pingdom.com/#5f264f850d800000

That's the issue for me - it doesn't feel like Boards any more.

We all understood that the site needed a major overhaul but the manner in which it's been handled (or mishandled) begs so many questions.

Bringing it back to basic terms. Are we getting good value for money... what with it being a free site.🤨

I can't imagine Boards.ie being anything but a loss maker for the group. And a huge headache for little thanks. There were probably high hopes for monetisation at one stage, but never came to fruition. So, I'm only grateful for whatever service is provided.

I can actually see a... 'feck it' from the owners and it being closed. I used to primarily post on P45.net (hold a seance, and ask your forebears) and don't use other social media - but being in my 40s I'm not the target audience for any modern social media.

It's a pity vbulletin was too expensive to upkeep, but happy with the current iteration.

4 ads in the thread and the fixed ad at the bottom of the screen, screams desperately selling advertising space.

Absolutely. So many whinging self-entitled Karens who use this site for free demanding to speak to the manager. Sad? Sad.

So, I've lost maybe about 20% of the functionality that was here before. Is that an issue for me and my life? Nope.

Considering they were using a really hacked version of vbulletin, I don't blame them for the platform change. It can't have been a totally monetary decision as vbulletin licensing it's that expensive.

Boards.ie continues to remain a fantastic resource and a good brand. It's outlasted bebo, friendsreunited, myspace and periscope in it's time.

So...it's not okay to give feedback about the site on the feedback about the site forum.

But it is okay to give feedback about the posters who contribute to the feedback about the site forum, and to call them "sad Karens"?

It's good to know functionality doesn't affect your life. I'd put it even further, nothing here, posts, threads, topics, feedback, functionality, none of it really affects my life in any meaningful way.

If the time taken to post over 21k posts and read many 10s of thousands of other posts isn't meaningful I'd very much wonder what is meaningful to you?

How much TV or youTube is meaningful? Same thing.

as an occassional boards user for many years, boards seamed to make a Lazurus style comeback with Covid, as people tried to figure out a new normal world and come to terms with a pandemic in our enforced lockdown, tied to computers and Zoom, then the migration seamed to kill it off, by bad design - boards has its uses and I still use it , but that migration really was a disaster.

I hope not.....I find it a huge trove of useful info....even if it is harder to find it now.

I think most people's frustration is how complicated it has proved to be to update what is now an almost quaint version of internet communication, but on a website that is quite precious to a lot of people. I'm here in one form or another since 2003 or 4 I would guess. I've always been sure Reddit works fairly similar, but I never bothered my hole to find out, because I use Boards. I'm a Boardsie.

And I think what they overlooked when they hobbled the site albeit temporarily for the update was that while the ones who are too old or too stubborn to change will always come back, the casuals that dropped it as soon as it broke won't, and so the diehards won't have any randomers to engage with and that in internet terms is death.

is anyone else getting the cookies pop up at every single page change recently? I never pick the agree option, but pick the middle one where you save your own preferences and exit, but it'll pop up on every page. it's a pain in the hole.
