What was this? I didn’t see anything, and have seen zero suggestion online of anything untoward.

When blade was receiving attention early on in the game there was a replay which showed Zebo sticking a shoulder into his back

While blade was one of the players attempting to hold Earls up in a tackle and had his back to the Munster line. Absolutely nothing cheap shot about that go away with ya.

A lot of bile and bitterness on the back of last night's result.

From who exactly? Pretty sure OP is a Leinster supporter, meanwhile there's a fella over in the Connacht thread trying to bend spacetime to make Beirne onside.

I dunno, I'm still not so sure how people can't see that Beirne retreated before Scannell kicked that ball. Was he offside, maybe, but certainly not as clear as some here seem to state.

I can't see how anyone is even discussing the YC it was a clear head to head and the tackler has the responsibility to go lower. I also thought Hansen was lucky that he was only penalised and no card given when he took out POM from a restart. 14 was also involved in an off the ball incident that wasn't checked, lucky for him.

The lineout issues put us under pressure, no point kicking to the corner if you're going to cough up the ball from the resulting lineout, I suppose both teams will look back at their lineouts. Cloete and Beirne turned some Connacht ball, they kept us in the game and I thought Kleyn had a horse of a game. Aki is the heart of everything good in Connacht, he seems to increase their collective performances, he was everywhere last night. He was my motm.

Retreating alone doesnt make you onside.

There was multiple players offside when the kick happened. They all have to retreat or stand still until an onside player brings them on. they didnt do that therefore the munster attack was offside and the score shouldnt have been allowed.

I mentioned the yellow and acknowledged I was wrong having not seen the head on head due to watching it on a mobile. And Beirne was 100% offside. He did retreat, but not far enough. The pictures and footage are pretty clear. He was offside. It’s completely okay to acknowledge that. It’s not like the result is going to be reversed or anything. And these things happen in games. There’s almost like some sort of siege mentality here with some when people aren’t gushing over Munster. It’s bizarre.

I'm only saying that it wasn't as blatant as some would have you believe

There were some salty connacht supporters saying Munster had '17 players' implying that both the TMO and Ref were playing for munster last night

We got away with it on Saturday night, serious questions need to be asked about the kicking and the lineout... Not naming or blaming any particular player

Yep I agree. Munster were poor enough all night and were poxed lucky to win.

This entirely depends on where they were on the pitch at the moment the ball was kicked

The likelihood is that Beirne was offside, but it was marginal and we don't have all of the camera angles and slow motion footage required to assess that for ourselves.

Anyway, the game is over, I'm glad we're arguing over a decision that benefitted Munster, plenty of times we've been on the other side of a marginal call.

Its still the first month of the season. 4 games in. Players playing their first game of the season in greasy dirty conditions.

Absolutely not ideal, but not panic stations yet

4 games into an 18 game season, or ~20% of the season

4 wins out of 4 with the annual slip up to Connacht avoided, I'll take it.

Have to say I saw it too, but felt it a weak attempt at a clear out than a cheap shot.

Two unused subs at the weekend (Cronin and Flannery) which is a little unusual.

I'd expect us to go close to full strength again vs Ospreys with just a few changes depending on whos fit

Ospreys likely to be missing their internationals due to the NZ game

Conor Murray should be available following the Lions tour

Big call to be made at OH,

Do you back Joey to play himself into form or do you go with Healy who impressed against a poor Scarlets side?

If the last few years have taught us anything it’s that continuing to play someone to allow them play themselves into form is a recipe for disaster.

what about trying carbery at Fb and Healy at OH?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭phog

We go full strength, the lads involved in the Irish camp won't be available to us for our two games in SA. I think it could be Healy to start with Joey on the bench but that's based on rotation rather than dropping Joey.

I recognise Joey hasn't been top of his game but he needs game time and there's only way to get it that's by playing games.

Watched this yesterday after hearing about the result and performance, and I didn't think Munster were as bad as was made out, especially in the first half. There were positives like Conway's break from Casey's reverse pass, Killer's break and offload and the huge overlap we engineerd that Coombes threw the forward pass from. Things just weren't quite sticking, and then deteriorated in the 2nd half.

    Some points:

    1. That try. It's as poor a decision as I've seen in awhile. I remember back to the Rainbow Cup game and Conway had a disallowed try for a knock-on in the build up that didn't at all look clear and obvious to me. This was orders of magnitude worse so can understand Connacht fans frustration.

    2. Just from a technical perspective, the stills showing Beirne's position at the time the ball left Scannell's foot aren't reflective of the offside tho as Beirne retreats after. (Not nearly enough, so please don't jump down my throat, just thought this was an interesting observation).

    3. Coombes, Aki and Beirne were the stand outs for me. Carty as well played very well, and always comes across like a gent in interviews. (As an aside, loved Mike Haley's comments about Thomond as well).

    4. Earls at centre just doesn't work, he's in far too much heavy traffic and has to get involved in rucks too often. Needs must, and he's game with his rucking, but you're just not getting the best out of him there.

    5. Conway is beginning to gain some form, his kicking in particular was excellent yesterday.

    6. Congrats to Stephen Archer with 233 caps, becoming our 4th most capped player. He's having a good season as well.

    7. Wycherly with a game-changing cameo off the bench. He's becoming increasingly important for us; doubly so with Snyman's injury and Billy Holland's retirement.

    8. Some of Joey's kicking (the awful block-down aside) looked excellent, but he just looks shorn of confidence at the moment with everything else. I think I'd go with Healy next week. If he goes well, then Joey could need some serious improvement with any opportunities he gets with Ireland over the AI's or else he could be out of favour for the trip to SA.

As for the "cheapshot". It was pretty innocuous. Calling it a cheapshot is complete hyperbole.

I would say we have enough FBs, Haley, Gallagher, Zebo and Daly are all well capable of playing there

Friend asking the URC to appoint a manager for referees after Saturday's game. This is starting to get spicy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,047 ✭✭✭Bazzo

I'm more surprised to find out there isn't one already, to be honest.

I think it's no harm for the league to look at how they can improve officiating standards anyway, it seems to be one of the main criticisms levelled at them from every side. The South African teams have vocally been less than impressed since joining.

Look the difference in standards of referees in the league is legendary but what I can't understand is how a ref can penalise a player and talk to the captain about why he awards a penalty and then a few minutes later ignores the exact same foul play from the opposing team - that drives players and fans mad.

Hopefully, some good will come of this stance that Friend is taking.
