"No going back to lockdown", the audacity of MM to even mention that word after the destruction it wrought on the nation. And the spoon fed media glorifying our brave hero, at the same time softening up the public for the normalisation of extended restrictions. An elderly person reading that brazen headline this morning will be over the moon when the proposed October 22nd easing of current guidelines is abandoned. Phew, dodged the proverbial bullet we did. But it's alright folks, restrictions in some form will persist throughout the winter. And setting the groundwork for repeated shenanigans in years to come. Nearly two years to shore up the health service and expand ICU capacity, sweet f-all done. And we're supposed to have our tongues wagging that "lockdowns" are off the menu. An embarrassment of a country.

My strong gut-feeling currently tells me that a 3-shot regimen will generally prove necessary for adequate somewhat longer-term immunity, and will be one the gold standard. In which case it wouldn’t be at all surprising that current vaccination programs have not proved to be solution the world needs.

It is Covid which has wrought destruction on the nation. And most other nations. Not lockdowns.

Did he say that or that is what the reporter picked up?

    Thanks.

I thought that the vaccine reduces cytokine storm which in turn result a lower viral load?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭US2

Fauci said months upon months ago that fully vaxxed have similar or even higher viral load than unvaxxed. I think it's clear the vax is good at stopping severe disease but is kind of useless at preventing transmission therefore vaccine passports are a complete waste of time, only used as coercion which is morally and legally wrong.

Its a bit more nuanced than that...

"Vaccinated people with Delta might remain infectious for a shorter period, according to researchers in Singapore who tracked viral loads for each day of COVID-19 infection among people who had and hadn’t been vaccinated. Delta viral loads were similar for both groups for the first week of infection, but dropped quickly after day 7 in vaccinated people."

Those comments from Cillian De Gascun are a bit of an eye opener. Vaccines aren’t sufficient/effective in suppressing or eliminating the virus without other measures and vaccinated/unvaccinated can transmit at the same rate. Where does that leave us? Why can’t they tell us about any plans to increase hospital capacity or why they won’t bring in antigen testing. Without those two things I think we’ll be stuck in an endless loop.

Yes the vaccine helps you recover quicker. Self isolation should still be in effect if you get infected.

We are in an endless loop. Covid isn't going away. We will be in the exact same position next year maybe even worse as less and less people will bother with the vaccine as the novelty of getting it wears off.

Open up, people will die and that's sad but living in constant fear preventing people from living their lives is sadder imo.

Why are you living in constant fear?

Most people I know are vaccinated and enjoying life.

Lots of people are still affected by covid restrictions.

There is something really useless about people saying "just accept it all and move on". It reminds me of people being handed a **** sandwich and being content because they cut the crusts off.

A lot of people I know are alreadt using antigen tests . For a child with a sniffle or cough , if they want to visit elderly or immuno compromised relations , if they want to be sure before meeting friends etc etc . Its reassuring if there is a tiny doubt and I have used antigen tests for that reason

People generally are for more clued in than NPHET are giving us credit for

We have to move on though. The vaccines are allowing this.

The government need to announce clubs and full gigs on Tuesday and get those people back to work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,533 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

The vaccine makes you significantly less likely to not need hospital treatment or ICU. Its the most effective way of reducing pressure on ICU. We can 'carry' a lot more cases in vaccinated v unvaccinated.

At some point you would think given the tranmissibility of delta that the unvaccinated will eventually hit natural immunity also.

ICU capacity is increasing but outside of surge capacity this takes time and considerable money. It was sth like 255 pre covid, its now in the 280s and on the way to 320.

So its all about ensuring the number of severe cases v hospital capacity are balanced.

Most people I know are doing the same.

Sadly that won’t change the fact that 70 people in ICU is enough to make NPHET, our media and government hysterical and god knows what decisions they’ll make.

Quite a jump in hospitalisations this morning although some of that may be related to outbreaks in hospitals, 459 in hospital and 74 in ICU. Almost certainly suggests some adjustments to Friday. Headlines will no doubt point out it's the highest since March 4th!

Can’t see NPHET saying yes to nightclubs. I actually think they’ll recommend reimposing some restrictions.

All the young people in ICU most be serious cause for concern alright

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

Extending the green cert is pretty much a given. I think they may let nightclubs do their thing with a green cert. Antigen testing is another option from government and they can point to that successful trial run of a few weeks back.

The only restriction might be advising a slowdown in the return to work. Glynn has already given a message on that.

The study they were based on found that unvaxxed viral load could be as high as unvaxxed but that the vaxxed were less likely to be infectious and the viral load was cleared faster.

What you have posted is misinformation.

This is exactly what everyone is forgetting

Tony is on annual leave and will return to digest the data tomorrow. Only then will our fate be decided and confirmed

People have short memories of last Autumn. Back when all members of NPHET were satisfied that the numbers were stable and just needed to be monitored. Tony returned the following day and mandated a lockdown that he didnt want to lift for 8 months, only for the government decided we should have some freedom for Christmas in Ireland.

If vaccine passes are retained we've been sold a complete pig in a bag yet again. We could have opened up last June with vaccine passes.

I cant understand the lack of value Irish people put on basic freedom or even accuracy behind what they are been told and accountability of those making serious decisions.

Cases reported early today, 1,380 new cases.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,148 ✭✭✭Chris_5339762

1,380 today when there is realistically 2,000 cases today given recent trends. Gives them 600 "spares" to report either on the day of the NPHET meeting or later in the week we'll get a 3,000 to shock us into feeling we need to not roll back on restrictions.

    This has happened before.

Government sources believe the hospitality sector will have to “step up” Covid certificate compliance. There is a view that a ‘nod and wink’ culture has developed in pubs and restaurants, particularly in recent weeks, and this has contributed to the increase in Covid cases.

The level of distrust of the Irish public by those in charge is outrageous

Even if they are no longer checked as rigidly, 9 out of 10 of us have them. 9 out of 10 in a restaurant would be vaccinated.

We must be the most docile fools in the world to believe this rubbish

Right up there with falsifying Antigen tests

How have the hospital figures increased so dramatically?

Back log maybe but not sounding promising esp with NPHET meeting tomorrow to examine data

Why don't they just give us a weekly total of cases, the daily count is not giving a clear picture of where we are. Differences of near 40% per day in the same week. Today we 'turned the corner' at 1380, yesterday we turned in to a ditch at 2180, tomorrow might be 2260.
