Dublin councils obsession with Israel/Palestine conflict

Does anyone know why councillors, particularly around Dublin, have this obsession with Israel/Palestine?

I don't mind issues around the world being raised in various fora but for the last 10 years at least DCC in particular, but others as above, seem to go out of their way on the Palestine issue. If it's not actual votes on Palestinian issues it's flying Palestinian flags at council buildings.

My idea would be how about they do the job they are elected to do instead of spending time on this stuff that is utterly irrelevant to the everyday lives of people they are supposed to represent?

Could be wrong but this obsession seems to be mostly Dublin councils. Not sure about elsewhere.

If only they spent the effort looking after the place they are supposed to look after would be my opinion and leave international disputes to others qualified and relevant.

What explains this and do you think it's a good use of time and resources by councillors?
