I guess it was a trade off between playing a mix of "1st teamers" and squad players for the next 3 games or send out team of squad players one of the weekends and go full bore the other two.

Anyway excited to see Ahern, Barron, the Dalys, Kendellen, J. Wycherley, Patterson, O'Sullivan and Crowley

Jenkins has picked up another injury

MRSC newsletter saying there will be usual lottery draw for November International matches.

The top 8 don't automatically make the Champions Cup though. You either need to be the best team in your region or in the top 4 to be guaranteed European qualification,. So yes, every game does count.

There's also a thing called mixing and matching which could have been done across all three games. That would have been a far more valuable experience for the young lads than sending out a scratch team. Now maybe they'll surprise is all and get a win, but I won't be holding my breadth.

It reminds me of the selection against Edinburgh a couple of years ago, where we lost narrowly in Musgrave. The difference being that game was sandwiched in between a load of Interpro and Champions Cup games.

A loss here (which I think is likely) and we’ll need to pick up wins against Connacht and Ospreys. I wonder does JVG want to go full bore against Connacht after them turning us over last time out.

I disagree. Personally That team is a poor selection. Very small pack. You are putting out a 9,10,12,13 who haven't played together much, if at all. JoS, Cloete and JoD aren't exactly going to break the gain-line for you, nor is the front row. You could select better if you picked names at random out of a hat.

Excited by Goggin and Coombes though.

That back line is very exciting. Gallagher was excellent pre-shoulder injury so hopefully he can kick on and make things happen in open space.

It was well documented that Nash had an excellent pre-season while Coombes ripped it up with Garryowen last weekend (and looked impressive in limited time last year).

Goggin will be looking to make a point after his awful performance against the Sharks.

Healy at 10 should help keep us managing the game well too rather than going full crazy.

Daly also getting in on the action - was excellent in the games immediately post COVID.

Is Coombes more a winger than a midfielder tho? I liked what I saw of him last year, tho.

The one thing that comes to mind with this selection is that, as with same-conference games becoming more important in previous seasons, now the interpro’s do, so I expect us to be fully loaded vs Connacht.

All his appearances for Munster have come on the wing.

He played centre in the Grey vs Red pre season game and carried well there, he has the size to play centre.

The conference thing is being overplayed. Your final position in the main league table is the one that decides your position in the regional shield table. Yes you play the other 3 Irish teams twice, but all 18 results count.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,269 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Only 6 games for CC qualification tho, effectively tho, no? That could up the variance there. Or is my understanding of it wrong? Are the regional conferences made up of results across the board?

Regional conferences are made up of results from 18 games, I see your confusion and I thought that would be the case also earlier on

With regards to champions cup places there will be 8 spaces made up of the 4 "pool" champions and the 4 next best. Effectively it means the top 6 are guaranteed a spot in champions cup as 1 of the pool winners will be top overall and another will be minimum 5th

They're made up of all results, not just the interpros. Basically we've gone back to the days where one team from every country has to qualify, only this time its regions with Scotland and Italy making up one regions. The shields are just a way of dressing that up.

Interpro’s of less significance than I originally thought so. I suppose pro’s and cons to both approaches.

Complete aside but healthy viewing figures so far. It’s early days but the re-brand and inclusion of the other SA teams feels like a marked improvement:

Curious as to who the hell was watching Cardiff v Connacht but the theme is pretty clear there that the viewership is massively boosted by South Africa (unsurprisingly)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,852 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I was watching it, had nothing else to do on a Friday night so threw it on haha

I suspect this will be a thing going forward if it stays on free to Air (or just very cheap) and the. URC will make a big deal of it to get more TV advertising revenue

Munsters tour to South Africa cancelled and will now be a tour to Italy if this news site is to be believed

The O'Donoghue - Liam Coombes try was exemplary.

    Snyman looks fucked.

It's sad to see the lack of discussion on the game this days. The chat on hear used to rival the analysis.

Im only catching the game now.

When you read back on the number of posters writing off munster your not missing any great level of insight.

The way the deliberate knock on law is penalised is such bullsh*t.

    It rewards poor attacking play.

Gallagher's hand was tucked in to make a tackle. He wasn't even looking at the ball.

McNicholl just timed the pass badly. He failed to commit the defender and just threw it into his hand. But he gets rewarded with a penalty.

I'll bet you're glad to be wrong? If it makes you feel any better I didn't think we'd come away with a try bonus and +30 so I'm also glad to be wrong

Hopefully it didn't come at the expense of Snyman

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,223 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Well all I can say about that is wow! I thought a LBP would have been a good outcome from today. There's definitely nobody who would have predicted what happened. Fair play to the young lads for proving nearly everyone wrong.

The only bad note was Snyman. It looked like his other knee from the previously injured one, so hopefully it's not serious.

Ben Healy is the best outhalf in Ireland after Sexton, he should be Munsters starting outhalf.

We seem to be going in the right direction but still very early in the season

Make or break season for VG

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,098 ✭✭✭Poorside

I certainly didn't see that coming, some performance by the whole team with a tip of the hat to CC and Healy.

RG has a bit of time before he'll really be needed, think there's something like 5/6 weeks before the HEC kicks in.

Even if he's not ready, Jenkins should be,and if he's not fit enough I'd have no issue with either of today's starting locks taking to the field.

I think the story here is how bad scarlets were as opposed to how good munster were.

We need more variation in our starting outhalves for sure and there's definitely diverging special about Healy but to say he's the best in Ireland after a brilliant performance against Scarlets is probably a push
