Unregisterd Ram

Hi,

I need your wisdom!!

I just bought 20 hoggets and am going about buying a ram.

One farmer I know has unregistered rams. Can I buy one or do they need to be registered?

I am so sorry to sound like a total dummy, I kinda am in this situation!!

Any advice is welcome :)

Yes you can buy away no problem.

Unregistered will probably be a little cheaper also.

I do understand that I have no business buying sheep when I don't know these things.

I bought them with my father, as my own thing.

Registered only means his family tree has been documented with the breed society over the years and you usually get a piece of paper from the society as a birth cert with the ancestors on both sides back a few generations. It means he's pure bred also.

Pure bred means that his ancestors were all whatever breed of ram it is. The unregistered rams could also be purebred.

Anyway we all had to start somewhere with sheep and you won't find out things if you don't ask.

I totally understand that now. I will go and have a look at the ram so and hopefully get a good price. He's asking for €300 for an unregistered charlaois ram.

Are you talking about registered / unregistered with a breed society or in the national sheep identification system?

Uregustered means with the breed society, sheep are tagged but not registered in the same way as cattle in the NSIS.

You won't get many good rams any less this time of year. Have you anyone to bring with you that can judge a ram and knows what to look for.

The charolais are easy lambed but can have little enough wool when born especially if crossed to ewes with bare wool. Other than that it's a good choice.

Yea I do have someone to come with me.

I'm going with charolais for the easy lambing, didn't know that about the wool though! My joggers are fully thick with wool so hopefully that will help the lambs.

i am the same as you always had texel rams changed over to charlaois a couple of years ago as easier to lamb ..
