Wonder would a second hand car dealer simply rent a car to someone for a few months. Have a need of a car for a few months and once it runs am happy to pay a few hundred a month for it's use. I'm not willing to pay in excess of a grand for a new car when first I don't wish to spend that sort of money and secondly I don't care about it being new. Am based in the midlands

How are you going to insure it?

You could always talk to one of the car rental companies about a long term rental instead. Might be the way to go.

    Just buy an old car.

Get something that tends to be reliable like an old avensis for about 1200 and drive it for the 6 months and sell it for the same after.

    Renting is a silly idea.

Check the insurance costs before buying anything. If buying you need the type of car that can be easily resold, such as long NCT, small engine size, low damage to bodywork, no smells, service history. A 1.0L Yaris for 500 euro would fit the bill. I bought one for 3 weeks as alternative to hire car. Sold it within 24 hours for price I paid.

In terms of insurance, you cancel or stop or defer you insurance after 6 months. You should ask the fees or fines for stopping. Some companies have a fixed free of say 30 euro, but then refund by cheque the full amount for the ,6 months left.

If you need short term do you have a no claims bonus? Will you get a reasonable insurance quote? Can you get named on a friend's car? Insurance is main issue/cost. Even for a hire car, you can often provide your own insurance saving compared to hire company.

Your insurance company won't transfer your policy to a car your renting long term. It's in most policy terms and conditions. And I'd doubt any dealer in the game of renting old cars is going to include insurance on it.
