above is a typo - it should say 'two' midfielders.

he didn't have two workhorses in front of him.

he'd Casemiro, and midfielders around him who could keep the ball high up the pitch, and they could generally play a higher line.

    but maybe I'm wrong.

with the tough run of fixtures coming up:

ole does very well, his job is secure and we are happy.

ole does terribly, he gets the sack and we are optimistic about a new manager.

what i dont want is something in between: trundle on, picking up about 12 points in the league from the 21 available (leicester to arsenal game). with a loss to city, chelsea and liverpool, and winning the other 4. getting 2/3 points in the CL vs 2 atalanta. everything hanging by a thread, but still a wee bit of hope; or a fools hope more like.

That's honestly my biggest fear about Ole going forward. Never does well enough to win any trophies, but constantly meets the utterly bare minimum expectations to keep his job.

United problem is how often they turn the ball over, They can not sustain attacks & constantly allow teams the chance to counter, & it won't be solved by buying just 1 world class DM ,

United play a front 3 & Bruno & it causes them a massive problem's with ball retention , Its 4 forwards Bruno is basically a shadow striker so United have 2 play behind him, no matter who they buy as a DM because of how Bruno plays they will need 2 sitting, 1 will never enough unless they change there wide forwards into possession based players & not direct runners ,

Madrid could play 1 holding Midfielder because they keep the ball better than United & have two midfielders in the half spaces who don't vacate the space all the time like Liverpool ,

City play 1 DM because they then have no CF & 5 midfielders in front of him keeping the ball & full backs who invert to also help keep the ball,

Ole like a kid playing Fifa just throws on 4 attackers and think that's enough

It's 100% what's going to happen, the likes of Bruno, Ronaldo or Mason will always do enough to keep Ole in the job and we'll pootle along ad nauseum.

The thing is if we don't start winning silverware our best players will start getting impatient.

New contracts for Carrick and McKenna according to Simon Stone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 408 ✭✭KurtBarlow

I agree that we will need to play 2 holders because Pogba and Bruno aren't the robust pressing number 8s you need to make a 433 work however you could certainly improve on the 2 in there . Can you imagine how much better we would be with this team and a prober coach

    De Gea

    W.Bissaka Varane Mcguire Shaw

    Kante Jorginho

    Greenwood Bruno Sancho or Rashford

    Ronaldo

I just seen on the Liverpool thread that no striker has made less presses than Ronaldo in the Prem ,which isn't a problem if your set up to deal with that but with Bruno behind him who loses possession quite often it compounds the situation ,

Both of them are unreal & have to play but you need to do something to give them a better base & platform ,

Maybe having 2 wide forwards isn't the way to go, Could United go 2 up top with Bruno behind or even go like Chelsea with two just behind Ronaldo instead of wide, Actually Lakaku is the 3rd worse so shows exactly why they don't play wide forwards they want to protect the space where the opposition 6 is,

The whole attack is just trying to fit big names on a pitch with no plan & its the midfield 2 and defenders who are being made suffer ,

I agree . We are too top heavy. It just goes to show there's no plan. Cavani was basically told lies in the summer so he'd stay.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,470 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

He wasn't told lies. The Ronaldo signing wasn't planned. If Ronaldo hadn't signed he'd still be wearing the 7 jersey and starting when fit.

The only way Ole gets sacked is if it's mathematically impossible to make top 4.

The new contracts for the entire coaching team prove that there is absolutely no intention to change manager. And have absolutely no intention to win things.

I hope Ronaldo hands in a transfer request in January. Because he's not winning anything at Man Utd and it saddens me seeing the greatest ever player waste his twilight years here.

But yet people will continue to support the Glazers and fund their cash cow.

When JM got the boot we were on 26 points after 17 played, 11 points off 4th and had qualified for the next round of the CL. Now there were obviously other issues at play with JM and it wasnt purely a results driven decision to boot him but precedent is there.

We are currently on 14 points and our next 10 games are

    Leicester A

    LFC H

    Spurs A

    City H

    Watford A

    Chelsea A

    Arsenal H

    Palace H

    Norwich A

    Brentford A

Looking at those fixtures, would you be confident of getting 15 points out of them? Say we do, that would leave us only 3 points better off than Jose was, and there is a strong possibility that we will be out of the CL in the group stages, again. Is 29 points and out of the champions league any better than 26 points and still in it? Not for my money anyway.

A determining factor that will keep Ole in the job is that there is nobody else imo capable of making a sustained run at 4th. The top three will be as they are team wise and it will be a three horse race for the title. The teams below us imo dont have enough, either player wise or managerially, for them to displace us. So by default, Ole stays at the helm. However I will say, knock out from the CL and a couple of heavy defeats to the likes of LFC or City could make life very uncomfortable.

The difference is that Jose was proving to be very high maintenance, he was falling out with players and calling out the club for not getting a centre back. That was all compounded by poor performances.

The Glazers adore Ole because he is the anthesis of José. He will never fall out with anyone and will never say a bad word about the club. Now the squad is so good that it can't possibly not make top 4. We'll accumulate enough points in the upcoming fixtures to stay in the hunt. There's absolutely no reason to sack him from the Glazers point of view.

They don't care if we get knocked out of the CL at the group stage. We did last year and he was safe.

People won't like this but I'm 95% sure Ole will be our manager next season.

This is how it is, until people actually start boycotting the club, but we know that will never happen.

Apart from the Ole stuff the last few days, I see United have being linked with Kessie of AC Milan on a free next summer. He looked a good player against us last season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,563 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

Does he play the same role as Pogba i.e attacking midfielder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,563 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

The fans and players will have to turn on Ole for him to be sacked. Jose was sacked because the players started turning on him and results went downhill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,199 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

CDM but he also tends to get his fair share of goals as well - haven’t seen loads of him but I believe he’s a box to box type of midfielder.

There is a write up about him here that should help: https://sempremilan.com/formation-evolution-and-a-changed-role-how-kessie-has-become-one-of-serie-as-best-midfielders

Nope. Hes generally gack going forward and has missed a few sitters for Milan.

The new manager greatly reduced his offensive responsibility. Hes like a bigger and stronger version of Kanté in that he is adept at breaking up opposition play and hassling and harrying anyone who approaches him.

The bonus he'd have over Kante would be he can drive forward with the ball to break through lines/press to start attacks for Milan even if he isn't a great playmaker.

The ideal signing so. Watch him go to Spurs now.

I thought Kessie was really good against us last season. Proper bossed the midfield in both games even if he faded out towards the end of the second leg I felt. He has that ability to look like he has far more time on the ball than he actually does, a thing we badly miss in the middle.

Renato Sanches is another id like us to look at. Seems to be finally showing his promise at Lille and looked great for Portugal in the Euros. Lille, like a lot of the Ligue 1 clubs aren’t in the best financial situation so he could be picked up at a bargain price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,563 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

Isn't he a winger though. We have enough of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,625 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

I've always viewed him as kind of a Fred type player, similar strengths and weaknesses.

"People say ‘go with the flow’ but do you know what goes with the flow? Dead fish."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,577 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

That's some compliment to him. I can't see it really. He looks good in Serie A and the odd CL game but Kante is several times the player he is imo. I think even Fred is better and busier when it comes to breaking up play.

He's not incredibly mobile and while he is very composed on the ball, I feel he would get caught out in possession or not have that time in the PL.

A player I like to watch but not one I would be pushing for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,625 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

I'd be the same as that really yeah from watching him not exactly an incredible amount of times but probably enough over the past couple of years to form the opinion

It's absolutely ridiculous that would couldn't have just got 2 CMs for cover on loan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,825 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

I wasnt comparing him to Kante abilitywise. Just as describing what type of midfielder he is. Obviously he is a discount version of Kante.

It's alright according to the athletics sources they have decided to start coaching McT into a 6 because ole decided he wants to play 433 in the summer.

I didn't read the article mind just read that on reddit, seems kinda far fetched because if it's true its beyond ahhhh ambitious to put it nicely.
