He qualified to be on the team; he was 4th at the Olympic games and is 15th in the world rankings; won his match today, not bottling it. He played awful stuff at times Friday and Saturday. But you probably need to get some rest. Tomorrow is Monday. Game over

In fairness I hate them - but amazing golfers. Unreal.

Best golfer do not always make the best captains ? He did a great job - but he had some team.

I find the criticism he’s getting astonishing. Stinks of hidden agendas. Anyone who has played the game knows how easy it is to practice your hole off, prepare as best you can and still go out and stink the course up.

Yeah these lads are pros but a peak Tiger Woods, who played the game in a way that no one else has, regularly bombed in the Ryder Cup.

Ive always had time for Rory but I’ve a lot more for him today after picking himself up and getting a point and then giving that interview. Bad week for him but he’s a credit to himself, his family and his sport.

Mcilroy wasn't picked he qualified by ranking points?

He never bottled the 4 majors he won or the 28 professional wins in his career.

Phil Mickleson looks like something from the wax museum.

The better team won by far, I don’t think any previous captains would have been successful this year.

on to the next one & hopefully some new faces come through for the Europeans, but reckon it might be America dominance for the foreseeable.

I agree, don't think any other European captain would have win this but do think they'd have put up a better fight. Harrington made some terrible mistakes on Friday and Saturday...

we only won 3 games - Jaysus.

Sometimes you never know what is going on in a person's mind or how hard they are trying. Tbh, I have criticized Rory in the past but going on his interview he was doing his damndest this week and for whatever reasons things didn't work out on Friday or Saturday. Sometimes the harder you try or the more you want to win things don't go according to plan

It's outrageous....some cl**n on here a minute ago saying he shouldn't have been picked and he's a proven bottler! Clearly knows noting about the game as they don't understand how Ryder Cup qualifying actually works and Rory a proven bottler??? This is a guy who has won 4 majors, 4 time PGA golfer of the year, 2 Fed ex cups and 3 times European order of merit winner....but he is a bottler apparently!!! 🙈

I have to admit - it must be hard for top level pros to listen to McGinley - they must hate him.

Going on World Rankings, US were favourites for 11 of the 12 matches

I think McIlroy needs to be dropped for next week's game against Asia.

Maybe bring him back in in an easy one to build his confidence back up. The home game against Antarctica would make sense for me…

Who would you have paired Westwood or Fitzpatrick with? What other pairings were incorrect? Tell us the pairings you would have made

So you think he got the pairings correct so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,379 ✭✭✭blackcard

You are the person saying he got the pairings wrong. What would you have done differently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,885 ✭✭✭DeanAustin

He clearly didn’t. But no matter what way he shuffled the pack, they were getting hockeyed. The Americans are so much better than any combination of 12 European players. Paddy could have done better but he could never have done enough with that American team especially when they were playing like that.

Theres always a desire to find a scapegoat but sometimes, you’re just not good enough. Europe just aren’t good enough.

We will never see a worse performance in the history of this tournament.

Harrington needs to be grilled over his selections and pairings. It was clear he had lost the dressing room by the end of the day one.

Meanwhile stricker did an amazing job and got dechembeu firing and the fans behind him. His selection of youth paid dividends.

I'm torn over Harrington, on Saturday he persisted with playing guys/pairings who clearly weren't performing. But on the other hand this is all hindsight and there's nothing to say the likes of Lowry would've faired any better in foursomes. It's damned if you do damned if you don't kind of stuff. All we can say for certain is the USA earned their points(mostly) and were deserved winners

People who are saying Harrington got his picks wrong and pairings wrong should tell us what the correct choices were

Old timers.. Westwood and Poulter & the not so young anymore, Rory.

which kind of makes it more depressing, if you are are taking hope from the future younger players.

They were favourites in all the singles with the bookies too, apart from the Rahm game

I think McIlroy’s demeanour all week, his performances and interview after his match this evening shows how much pressure he put on himself but probably how much pressure was put on him also. He shouldn’t carry the can for Westwood, Poulter, Casey and Fitzpatrick playing shîte on Friday and Saturday. If McIlroy went and won 5 points it would have taken a couple of points back off the US final tally. It wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference overall.

If he didn’t tear up in his interview, he would have to put up with a bit of grief off the US fans for a while but I’d say his interview will save him from getting it bad. The Americans are fickle people and love a tearjerking moment. I do feel sorry for McIlroy though, deep down I think he’s a good chap and he just didn’t look himself at all this week. Nobody knows what way the team vibe was and how much pressure he was feeling.

Anyone having a pop at him or any other of the players or Harrington simply haven’t a clue. Mistakes were made and players didn’t perform, but who really cares? The players do obviously but I’m as big a golf fan as you’ll get and the result really doesn’t bother me all that much. I love the event and I love watching it but I’d be more disappointed if Lowry, McIlroy or someone like Hovland blew a standard tour event. I think the Ryder Cup has turned into a hype event now and has probably lost a bit of its spark with all the nonsense Sky Sports go on about and all this Postman craic with Poulter. For me it was a better event 10 or 15 years ago.

Surely the single results just go to show the cards Harrington was dealt. It was just going to be possible to match the Americans on current form, no matter what way he arranged them.
