Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Looking at buying a used car from a dealer, but the car has no current tax. How do I drive it home without breaking the law?

Technically you can't. I've done it before while in the process of getting it taxed, not much else you can do without leaving it at the dealer until it gets processed. If the tax is out of date for 2 months or more the car can be seized on the spot by Gardai. I'd carry around the receipt for purchase of the car with me and also not park it in any public place while tax is being processed, otherwise a parking attendant may issue you a fine for non-display.

On a side note the tax becomes liable from the 1st day of the month you take ownership so if you were to buy the car tomorrow (27th September), you would be liable for tax for all of September. If you were to buy it on Friday (1st October) you would be liable from October onwards, may not be an issue worth talking about if the tax is small.

Once deal is done, TAX it online and bring the printout of the receipt with you when you go to collect.

You can't do that until the day after the car is in your name with the last 6 digits of the VLC which you won't have yet received. You could do the forgot pin method though

I was getting a tad mixed up there.

"Your PIN is the last six digits of your Vehicle Registration Certificate Number when taxing a second hand (taxed before) vehicle.

Your PIN is the last six characters of your vehicle's chassis number (VIN) as printed on your RF100 form when taxing a brand new or imported vehicle for the first time."
