Bus Eireann problem

    Hi all..

    Son has started a course in Tralee, Co Kerry. Has to take the bus from Killarney in the morning to be there at 9 am. Only one local bus route service runs at that time.

    On way back home, no local bus route service is available (only one outwards is an hour earlier than when he's finished), but only Expressway busses.

    Bus eireann s 10 journey ticket is not valid on both services (even though its the same company). He can't even purchase a daily return ticket for 14.40 Euro student fare (which would have been expensive enough, given he has to travel 5 days a week), no - he'll have to purchase two single journey tickets a day which amounts to 17 Euro a day, or 85 quid per week!!

    Any ideas..? 🙂

    Would the train be any good to him or is it too far from the college? Weekly ticket would be €41.50 for Killarney - Tralee. Also, the student 10 journey ticket is €53.00 for Bus Éireann which would do him for the week. It appears that you are correct regarding the strange bus hours though.

    He should certainly get a student LEAP card.

    That way, the bus fare is EUR 5.95 single on the 284 and EUR 8.50 single on the 40.

    I would certainly raise this anomaly with the district manager in Bus Éireann Tralee to see if a later PSO service could be added as the timetable pre-dates the full separation of the commercial Expressway network from the subsidised PSO service for ticketing purposes.

    While it could work I am not sure the rational behind the old timetable reasoning. A new timetable would create the same problem for the OP.

    This issue has potential to damage BE (Dungarvan-Waterford, Cahir/Clonmel-Waterford) is another example of this.

    There are solutions to enable the revenue split. Why they are not in place is another issue and why the NTA haven’t identified the problem and helped addressing it.

    Its not good having drivers accepting and other refusing.
