AFAIK Arthur Guinness's birthday only became 24th September in 2009, arising from confusion as to what "Arthur's Day" was. The brewery had previsouly decided in 1991 that it was 28th September. Burke's Peerage had listed it before that as 2nd March. Fact is, there's no evidence anywhere of his birth date.

Opened a Bowmore 15 Sherry finish I had knocking about.

I’ve had all of their core range over the years, everything from the 18 to the old Darkest. Never a distillery that have fired on all cylinders for me.

Picked up a heavily discounted Jura Rum Cask Finish in Tesco NI last week. Pleasantly surprised at the tropical finish on it. It 1l too so will a good one to share with guests

Was having a Bowmore 12 last weekend and I thought the exact same thing, of all the distilleries on Islay it's the one that doesn't leave me wanting more

After a brief hiatus over the last six weeks or so I'm back into the whiskey. Trying some Eagle Rare 10 tonight. Enjoying it so far. A nice honey sweetness and smooth finish to it.

Next up is some Lagavulin 12 year old. This is a lovely drop. Less smokey but more complex than it's famous 16 year old cousin. This is finished in bourbon rather than sherry. Nice bite from the cask strength. If Bowmore is average this is top shelf Islay. Pricey at €150+ a bottle but I got a free sample so I'm not complaining too much!

Picked up a Glenlivet 12 Year Old for £19 there. The Founders Reserve turned out alright once half the bottle was down and the air got at it. Hoping this is a good bargain for the price.

    At that price? Of course.

Picked up a Teeling single pot a couple of weeks ago. Not too keen on it. I don't what it is about their whiskeys, but I find them a bit bland.

Also picked up the new 13yr old last week. That's actually not too bad, although it wouldn't be my first choice at €85 a pop.

Anyone know anywhere in Dublin that sells Ginger Wine? Want to make a friend a whisky mac over the weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,247 ✭✭✭SteM

Yeah, had seen that thread. The molloys I have tried don't do it anyway.

Friend of mine gave me a bottle of the new Tullamore Dew 13yo single malt, finished in Bordeaux casks.

She's not a big whiskey drinker, and knew I'd like it. Haven't opened it yet, but will try it over the weekend.

Midleton 2021 back on sale in the next week or two. The price has gone up to €200.

I think it cost me that earlier this year!

Weird there is nothing in this weeks or next weeks Aldi catalogue about a Japanese whisky.

I think it's just scotch, finished off in Mizunara casks in Japan, after reading some comments.

Yes looking at the label it is 'world whisky' matured in Japan.

That said ALDIs spirits specials eg Puca have been v good so despite the lack of authenticity might still be lovely.

I'm sure this is a good product, and well-chosen. But yes, I bet a lot of people will be buying this assuming it's distilled in Japan.

Obviously we discussed on here before that a very small amount of "Japanese whiskey" is actually distilled in Japan! Less than ten percent.

I know people who have been buying Japanese whiskey for years as their go-to, but they have no interest in Scotch, or would even claim they prefer Irish after Japanese, which makes zero sense from a taste profile point of view in most cases. There's no curiosity about where massive volumes of Scotch being exported to Japan originate from. I think some of it comes down to a bit of a halo effect that things coming from Japan enjoy, there's a lot of people who are just Japanophiles (I include myself in that).

I do miss the days when you could easily buy Yamazaki 12 year old and Hakushu 12 year old for about a third of what they cost now...

A bit harsher than I was expecting but a couple of drops of water really smooths it out. Had a second last night and will definitely have it again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,983 ✭✭✭mystic86

Surprised to hear that as the original is smooth, don't see why those casks would make it less smooth..

    How are the flavours?!

Doing a quick inventory for the winter whiskey season. Looking forward to opening some of these bottles. Anyone get anything interesting recently?

Have a bottle of laphroaig quarter cask I'm almost afraid to open. I'm not a huge peat fan so I'm afraid I won't like it.

Get rid of that brandy and rum, they've no place in those photos!
