Are you serious? Their mother died in absolutely tragic circumstances so long ago that they won’t even remember her. Their father was brutally murdered in a place far from home and they were at the mercy of his killers until their aunt came to find them, fight for them, and bring them home to the rest of their family. They have lived as her and her husband’s own children for 8+ years. Have a bit of respect.

I would have thought it more respectful to let them be known by their parents surname.

I assume the aunt adopted the children then? Bureaucracy is a lot easier if minors have the same name as the adult who is their legal guardian.

They are, aswell as the family that they are now part of.

They might do it themselves even as a mark of respect to the people who are raising them. They refer to their cousin as their big brother. I think it is lovely really that their aunt, her husband and son have done such a good job welcoming them into their home that they feel like they really are part of that family.

According to the article below Absolutely no guarantee of a trial - that deadline of accepting a plea deal this week doesn't seem to have been anything other than a simple milestone in a longer journey ahead.

I'm assuming they were given something like an offer of 9 years or thereabouts in a take it or leave it manner and they declined in the hope that closer to a new trial commencing, further better offers might be made?

yeah it sounds like it is an ongoing process which will suit the Martens especially given the mother has cancer, it allows them out on bail to be with her for a maybe at least the next 18 months. Though if they try to play hardball for too long there does come a point where the DA will have to put money and resources into hiring prosecutors to prepare for a re-trial, he is less likely to be offering a plea deal at that point.

What a pair of arrogant psychos ,

I honestly believe they think that's it there free and not going back

Good to see Jason and the Corbett family have some support locally
Several friends and local supporters of Mr Corbett came to show their support outside the courthouse in Lexington, North Carolina, on Wednesday.

Lateffa Dennis, whose son Travis worked for Mr Corbett, described the Limerick man as a “very caring person”. She told The Irish Times that she attended the company Christmas party with her son, and that Mr Corbett had gone out of his way to make her feel welcome, as she had recently lost her husband.

“Those two know what they’ve done,” she said of Molly and Thomas Martens. “A retrial needs to be held if that is what is needed to get justice for Jason.”

Ah so my assumption above was correct - they wanted “time served”

I’d say they wanted out of jail to be with the mother who’s been treated for cancer- don’t know her ultimate prognosis but it would be a strong reason to turn down even a minimum offer of 5 years 7 months as that would mean 2 more years - I’m sure they’re listening to their brief and he’s obviously optimistic but they could yet have made a big mistake here.

yeah that is a serious roll of the dice by the Martens. We dont know what exactly the plea deal was, only that it would have meant them serving somewhere between another two and five years in prison. But it would also have meant them going straight back inside while the mother has cancer. Going for a retrial buys them time to spend with her for now but if theyre found guilty of murder a second time they are looking at doing their full 20-25 year sentences. Tom Martens would likely die in prison.

A break in the middle of their sentence. Almost worse, to get out and enjoy a normal free life and then have to go back. That'd be almost worse, getting normality then going back in. Hope it is torture for them.

Anyone see the documentary on this last night on virgin media ? The crime scene photos are awful. I know they’ve been out of jail for a few months now, but they are sick **** the pair of them.

One of TM's defence lawyers has died so that unfortunately will delay their retrial even further.

Sorry, I can't see a link but I read it in a newspaper yesterday.

Was litterally going to mention that

    A bit about it here:

Also it was reported over last few days that the lead defending solicitor for the Martens passed away so there may well be a further delay in their re-trial- not great news.

Thanks. Another blow. That article mentions she is around the east coast on an extended holiday. My blood boils.

Been following this since day one , still can't believe that's she's out enjoying an extended holiday ,just listening to the interview where she asks when can she see "Her" children after smashing their fathers skull in was Sick

Also been following it since day one. Found the programme last night very good, and it revealed a few things I didn't know. Like the boyfriend she had just prior to moving to Ireland, and who she broke up with via email 10 days after moving to Ireland. And according to him, she is bipolar.

Didnt see the VM doc myself but will watch it whenever they repeat it a billion times. From the clips it seems they got access to her police interview tapes, its mad how things work in the US.

Saw the doc last night. Was shocking.

It looks like he was dead a lot longer than the time it took paramedics to get there.

Her ex saying she had bipolar too.

It looks like she was completely obsessed with the kids and he was leaving her

It’s in the virgin media player if you want to watch it. They had police video and yes they had the police interview tapes and pictures taken of the crime scene and of the then suspects.

It's worth watching. Some eye opening moments.

It was awful , so sad . Am I right in saying that Jasons home computer has never been found , or did I mishear that ? Was it gotten rid of because he apparently was looking up flights for himself and his children to return to Ireland ? How the Martens can live with themselves is beyond me .

Looking at the whole "picture", as much info as possible.......I agree with you.........if, and it's a big IF, they go back to porrige it'll be a relatively brief sentence/ a token gesture to keep the DA appeased, and served in county jail......they won't be going back to federal jail.
