Used car warranty in Ireland

I'm seriously considering buying a second hand Porsche Panamera Diesel. 1st gen model.

I've done a bit of googling, looked at the "buying a used car in Ireland" thread and searched the forum here but I can find very little information on getting a third party warranty on a used car privately.

I looked at the Mapfre website but that seems to be aimed exclusively at dealers. The only other option I've seen is carprotect.ie, but they won't quote the car I'm looking at saying it has either more than 120,000 miles or is more than 10 years old, neither of which are true.

Porsche themselves seem to offer a warranty on used cars, but I imagine the premium will be pretty eye watering.

Has anybody gone down this road before and have any advice on what the options are and costs involved. Is it worth it?

Can you get one from a dealer and have a warranty that way,would need one with a car like that.

I presume so, though I think most of the dealer warranties are 6 months max and probably limited in what they cover. In other words a rip off. Stand to be corrected on that though.

I was hoping to find more of what is available in the UK and the USA, "bumper to bumper" warranty for at least a year. I may call Porsche Dublin and see what they offer.

How old is the car here? You have to remember that the older the car the higher the risk of something going wrong. And lets face it anything that will go wrong with a Porsche won't be cheap to fix. 3rd party warranties are really an insurance policy against mechanical failure and like any policy the risk equation rises the older the car as well as the typical cost to repair. Dealers will apply the same logic and well factor in this cost into the cost of the car and warranty they give. I'm afraid if you want the security of a warranty on a fairly old car then it ain't going to be cheap unfortunately especially on a car like a Porsche.

Car will be 7 to 10 years old. Have my eye on a 2012 at the moment but would ideally like to stretch to a 2015 if possible.

I understand all that and I understand it will be pricey, but I can't even find somewhere to get a quote. Is it even possible?

Porsches are generally reliable but when something goes wrong it is probably going to be an expensive fix. If the warranty was going to cost thousands then maybe I'd be better off putting that money aside for a potential problem than actually getting the warranty? I reckon the most expensive problem likely to arise is an issue with the air suspension. Diesel engine is a VAG unit and seems robust. Auto boxes don't seem to be troublesome. Electrics are reliable. Maybe it's a waste of time getting the warranty at all.

If the likes of mapfree and carprotect won't offer cover then it probably doesn't meet their criteria and they probably think the risk is too high for them. It's basically an unknown quantity to them.

I might give Porsche a call out of curiosity and see what they offer. I'll report back if I find anything out.

Thanks for that. £1000 per annum over 3 years for a standalone warranty on the Panamera that covers parts and labour on everything other than consumables. I'd probably go for that to be honest. Peace of mind on a car likely heading for 100k miles.

Spoke to Porsche this morning. Warranty available on cars up to 15 years old/180000km. €3625 for 3 years. Car must undergo their 111 point check before it can get the warranty at a cost of €300.

I would be inclined to persuade the dealer to get the 111 point check done at their cost.

I have a Boxster for a little while now, pretty reliable car. I love the Panamera and did look at one sort of before buying the Boxster. I'd say talk to an independent Porsche specialist who can give you an idea of what goes wrong with that particular model and repair costs. Your buying a specialised vehicle and one with a warranty would be desirable. I bought my Boxster privately without a warranty and had zero issues with it and it's used pretty much daily. If you can afford the Panamera then go for it, class looking cars.
