Price of a tracking device?

So I need a tracking device in the new car for the insurance. One dealer offered to install one for around 1k - a 3 year subscription tracker. Is it market price or should I look at one independently and which one would be recommended ?

Not directly related to your question but anyone looking for a simple tracking solution.. I fitted an apple air tag hidden in my Golf R and can track it it required using the "Find My" app on my phone. Battery good for a year and simple to fit/hide.

Sounds expensive at 1k plus unknown yearly costs after year 3.

you could look into what the insurance will accept….

There are lots of cheaper options out there. I find the sigfox network base trackers very reasonable and accurate.

Why not buy an Apple Airtag and conceal in the car somewhere? 40€ for the tag and it has 6 months plus of battery life.

Don't want to derail the thread but two posters mentioned Apple Airtag to track the car...I thought that only worked over Bluetooth so was good for tracking things close by? How does it work when out of Bluetooth range?

Tracker is mainly for insurance reasons they also require approved tracking device, which I doubt air tag is.

Don't go with the official BMW dealer fit option whatever you do. I got one fitted last year on an X5 45e - expensive, not easy to set up and something the dealer rarely does so that didn't go very smoothly either.

There is built in tracking via the iDrive & MyBMW app, but that can be turned off in the car. However, if the car is stolen the factory can turn it back on at the request of the Gardai.
