What should be the appropriate punishment for leaking

Over the past couple of years leaking has occurred from a particular political party who has been in government for 10 years. What should be the appropriate punishment for the leakers? Is leaking live during cabinet more heinous and therefore requires a more stricter punishment?

In fact if any future TD leaks they should receive similar punishments, to show that nobody no matter who there are, or how powerful they are can get away with it. So why not start now by laying down a precedence.

There should be no punishment for exposing truth. Might keep people on their toes if they know there is a slippery tongue amongst them.

leaking something early is not exposing the truth, its trying to gain favor with a particular journalist.

Leaking to the press is common with every political party in every country. It's part and parcel of playing politics.

It's only really an issue if the leak is of some dangerous information (that could result in loss of life or substantial money etc).

Leaking has been political fuel since ancient Greece and probably earlier.

Any punishment would be hypocritical, because whomsoever in the Oireachtas or at party level would pass judgement, would undoubtedly have leaked themselves, to some extent, in the past.

If you disagree with a politician leaking cabinet information, don't vote or him/her at the next election. Fairly simple really.

There will always be another that will fill the pothole on your road or get you planning permission in a flood plane....😉

There seems to be a slightly loose use of the word 'leak'. In my book, a leak suggests releasing info to a journalist so the info gets into the public domain without the source bring identified; but what some of a particular politician has done which has been described as a leak, has been providing information to a friend for their benefit on the understanding it won't be made public. And they are two *very* different things.
